Allison will be speaking about encouragement in the gaming community. Both the encouragement she has received during her career and what we, as a community can do to encourage others. Encouragement can make all the difference for women who are interested in working in the video game industry and to help retain women already working in the industry. Over time this can help to reshape the industry. Additionally, Allison will address matters about the inner workings of a AAA game development…

  • Capturing Learner Trajectories in Educational Games through ADAGE (Assessment Data Aggregator for Game Environments): A Click-Stream Data Framework for Assessment of Learning in Play

    American Educational Research Association (AERA)

A central challenge to educational videogame research is capturing salient in-game data on play and learning. ADAGE (Assessment Data Aggregator for Game Environments) is a click-stream data framework currently being developed by the Games+Learning+Society research center to facilitate standardized collection of embedded assessment data across games. ADAGE integrates core game design structures into a click-stream data (telemetry) schema, which is then seeded with context vital to informing learning analyses. These data can be used to identify patterns in play within and across players (using data mining and learning analytic techniques) as well as statistical methods for testing hypotheses that compare play to content models. Three provided analysis examples show this diversity, combining applied statistics with Markov modeling and classification tree visualization. Overall, ADAGE provides a standardized game telemetry framework with a rich, method-agnostic data yield, efficient enough to have scalability, and flexible enough to use across games.

Fair Play is a web-based game designed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to reduce implicit biases (i.e., unconscious assumptions that arise from group stereotypes) against underrepresented individuals in academic science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM). In Fair Play, players take on the perspective of Jamal Davis, a young Black graduate student, on his way to become a renowned professor. In his journey, he meets peers and mentors who can propel him to achieve his dream, but people may not always be helpful. The game provides ample opportunity for players to experience implicit biases, particularly in encounters with other characters. By actively assuming the role of Jamal and experiencing bias through his interactions, we hope that our players will gain increased levels of perspective-taking, empathy, and awareness of biases against underrepresented individuals.
