ONE THING you must do for a successful career! Years ago, I was a successful technical staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory, but I was feeling a little stagnant. One day, I was helping to host a team of potential sponsors from USSOCOM, and I realized I needed to be working with them! I wasn't really sure exactly what they did, but here was this team of passionate, type AAA, inquisitive warfighters who were really making a difference- and I wanted to help. So, I talked with my boss about it. I talked with their leader and said I wanted to be a part of his team. But, they weren't sure about me. They didn't know me. I asked what it would take for them to bring me in. I was determined. It turns out, as part of this process, they did some checking on me. I traveled to several meetings, at their request, to provide scientific insights on technologies of interest to them. I touched base with them regularly, and continued to inquire about being an integral part of the team. Six months later, I became a part of that amazing team. It changed the trajectory of my career forever, and in a way that I would have never predicted! If you spend 40 hours a week (or more) in a situation that's not good for your mental health, you're probably not as energized, productive, engaged, or effective as you should be.
