The Pennsylvania Alliance for Design of Open Textbooks (PA-ADOPT) is pleased to announce the immediate availability of our ninth free and open eTextbook: "The Digital Storytelling Handbook" by Jordan Schugar, Professor of English, and Chris Penny, Professor of Educational Foundations & Policy Studies, at West Chester University of Pennsylvania (WCU). This eTextbook gives storytellers practical tools to help them think about different reasons for making digital stories and different ways to think about using and incorporating digital stories into teaching, learning, and living. In this eTextbook, readers will also learn how experiencing digital stories – as either the author or the audience – builds cultural competence and teaches us about humanity and the human experience. Co-authored with students, this eTextbook was written in the spirit of OER with the expectation that future readers and students have an opportunity to contribute a chapter, idea, approach, or methodology of the eTextbook’s basic content.”   Hudson, Le, Mangano, and McQuiston were all students in Dr. Penny's EDT 530: Digital Media Production and Storytelling course during the Spring 2024 semester. In this course, students participated in the development of an Open Educational Resource (OER) utilizing an approach known as Open Pedagogy. According to the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries, it is "the practice of engaging with students as creators of information rather than simply consumers of it. It's a form of experiential learning in which students demonstrate understanding through the act of creation. The products of open pedagogy are student created and openly licensed so that they may live outside of the classroom in a way that has an impact on the greater community." This is the first PA-ADOPT eTextbook to utilize Open Pedagogy. Congratulations to the Concord Free Public Library on achieving sustainable certification through the Sustainable Libraries Initiative's award-winning Sustainable Library Certification Program (SLCP). The CFPL is the first library in Massachusetts to successfully achieve this certification. We are very happy to have played a part in this important recognition. Here are some aspects of our design of the extension (and other updates) that helped with sustainability: ▪ Robust building envelope (walls 30% / roof 55% better than Code) ▪ Energy savings of 80% compared to baseline, with possibility of zero emissions once fossil fuels are eliminated from the electric supply ▪ Wood structure (stores embodied carbon) ▪ Adaptive reuse of a 1790’s building with envelope improvements to reduce energy use ▪ High-efficiency all-electric, fossil fuel-free HVAC system (air source heat pumps) ▪ Natural ventilation where permitted by Code ▪ Passive daylighting https://lnkd.in/ddVNM8Br

Delaware has a talented pool of arts educators, yet access to arts education varies across the state. While primary school students benefit from national standards, secondary education opportunities are uneven. This disparity limits the pipeline of students pursuing creative careers. To cultivate a thriving creative economy, Delaware must invest in comprehensive arts education at all levels. The CREATE Plan proposes some solutions: Recommendation #14 - Secure Arts Funding for Every Student: Dedicated yearly budgets should be allocated for arts education across all grade levels, with emphasis on low-income schools and support for administrative costs. Schools could use these funds for full-time arts teachers or supplementing existing programs with freelancers or non-profit providers. Recommendation #15 - Make Arts Education Mandatory in Secondary Education: Arts education participation should be established as a graduation requirement for all public high schools. This necessitates secure funding and ensures all students have access throughout their school career. Recommendation #16 - Improve Career Development Opportunities: We should create more opportunities for secondary and non-university students to explore creative economy careers. This includes annual career days for 15-24 year olds and establishing a formal mentorship program. Recommendation #17 - Advocate for More Pathway Courses and Associate Degrees: We should expand educational options for young people and adults by advocating for more pathway courses and associate degrees in creative economy fields. Community colleges often get overlooked when it comes to user experience (UX) in online education.
