Separated from the US, this tiny island was still the third-largest exporter of top 10 singles worldwide in 2023. New data from the global recording industry trade group IFPI reveals that Puerto Rico — if separated from the United States and treated as a separate country — still ranked third on a list of exporters of top 10 singles worldwide last year. In fact, Puerto Rico was barely edged out for number two by Colombia.” “Perhaps unsurprisingly, the United States dominated that list, and it isn’t even close — 113 singles from the US reached the Top 10 worldwide in 2023. But Puerto Rico came in at an impressive third place with 45, and only one hit behind Colombia at 46. And that’s still miles ahead of the UK’s 29, followed by South Korea’s 16. Puerto Rico is actually an extreme powerhouse in the music industry in its own right, even when viewed in a bubble and not as an extension of the US, as a US territory. Broadcast is dead. Long live broadcast. Olympic viewership is up across all platforms. NBC has finally made the leap and posted content everywhere. Peacock and the Peacock app, TickTok, the GoldZone channel, and linear broadcast. How does this relate to cloud production? I don’t need massive budgets to accomplish this. A watch along feed like Dressage with Snoop and Martha can be added with minimal extra resources. Get the feed to the cloud… Spin up a simple cloud control room… stream it to the world. Add a service like Dolby.io…. get your own interactive multiview. Broadcast isn’t dead, it’s just different. Roblox and Fortnite are not solely “games.” They’re UGC platforms cultivating communities and experiences digitally — “always on” and fully customized is the North Star strategy for how to maximize the value. As a UGC platform, pop culture trends can make their way to #Roblox thanks to our fun and incredibly creative community. As our community grows, it’s becoming more common to see some pop culture trends start on Roblox. For the past month a trend known as “Emergency” has popped up on #TikTok and IG feeds with people showing off their outfits while doing a simple shuffle. This trend originates from nowhere else but Roblox and an emote from Ice Spice. How we got here: 6/5: The emote is published to Roblox and is based off Ice Spice’s version of the Sturdy dance. Her take is slower and more casual than the Sturdy. The emote finds its way to social media the way many emotes do, with Roblox users showing off/reviewing emotes on their avatars. 6/12: The TikTok that started the trend is published by @illtetotetoyou, showing Roblox avatars dancing to the “Paging Dr. Beat” track. The TikTok now has over 10mil views. From there, like many trends, it morphs like a game of telephone. Creators have kept the audio and the movement as part of the trend but have changed the trend into a mini fashion show, showing off thematic wardrobes. Nurses and first responders have (naturally) gotten in on it but other participants include Kpop stars, pets, Olympians like Norwegian viral sensation Henrik Christiansen (aka Muffin Man), rock stars like Olivia Rodrigo and of course, Roblox avatars. So…why? There’s often no explanation why some trends take off and become what they are, but the simplicity of the movement (no complex choreography) & easy edit make it something most can do. Another round of excitement and rebirths to emerge from #Hollywood as #Paramount, the original producer of #thegodfather seeks to re-create itself as a creative-tech hybrid. I am curious to see what the meat on those bones, given the tendency for large companies to use technology at its edges rather than making it a core operational focus. The fact they have now referenced #directoconsumer, #AI, and even #layoffs suggests that they are looking at the right things and understand the difficult challenges for legacy companies to compete in the new era. The fact that David Ellison's father is CEO of Oracle and is part of the deal makes these claims a little more credible. Expect to see more of these #spins as those left reeling from the #streamingwars find their next footing. #innovation

Netflix had another impressive earnings call yesterday, adding another 8M global subscribers in Q2 (total now 277M) and further cementing its spot as the #1 streaming service in the world. Other key takeaways: 1. Revenue of $9.56B and operating income of $2.6B 2. Coming Q3: New TV homepage ("biggest update in a decade") 3. Quote on streaming competition: “The challenge for so many of our competitors is that while they are investing heavily in premium content, it’s generating relatively small viewing on their streaming services and linear continues to decline,” the company notes. So going forward, “we believe our biggest opportunity is winning a larger share of the 80%+ of TV time (primarily linear and streaming) that neither Netflix nor YouTube has today.” 4. Bundles: 'Yes' with Mobile providers, pay TV providers & device manufacturers, but 'No' when it comes to other SVODs.

A couple of months ago I posted about RIAA suing Verison. Last month Verizon shot back: https://lnkd.in/g23p4KSX What will be the end result of this “conversation’ playing out in court. In the long term. Is this a result of technology (streaming services) not addressing the problem that they were trying to solve? Perhaps this is a signal that further innovation is needed in how content is managed, distributed, and monetized online. There's a strong argument that, while tech helped create more accessible music platforms, it hasn't fully addressed the concerns of artists, songwriters, and other creators. Is this lawsuit an opportunity to revisit those revenue-sharing models and perhaps craft something fairer?  We want to move forward and not limit creativity as it seems the problem is still not solved. Where do we go from here?

DURING THE FALL This past week: - We found out that Streaming hit its highest share of TV viewing ever. - We learned that YouTube surpassed The Walt Disney Company as the most watched single distributor - on the TV. - And we heard from Sony’s CEO that in the next two years the Media industry is in for “chaos - mergers and bankruptcies and sales and all kinds of fun things.” “The business will be in a period of chaos for the next 18 to 24 months. Just look at all the companies with cable networks that have this albatross of cable networks around their necks that they have to figure out what to do with.” https://lnkd.in/eGmhjXya The most surprising part of all this? That the collective braintrust of the Media ecosystem acted as if all of this was somehow surprising. “Vinciquerra is certainly not the first media executive to predict more consolidation in Hollywood, but he may be the only one using the most-damning language.” - IndieWire Really IndieWire? I have been ringing the alarm bell with much stronger language FOR YEARS. I have written the phase “Media Apocalypse” more times than anyone can count. I have been urging Disney to do big things like buy Roblox. I have been calling for David Zaslav to be fired for malpractice. I have been beseeching the C-Suites, boards, and shareholders of Big Media to look beyond the models of the past, look towards Big Tech lifestyle bundles as the the future, to collaborate with their data in order to better compete with the Trillion Dollar Death Stars, to empower younger product and project managers to make the transformations they need, and to (finally) put their consumers at the center of everything they do. While some of you reading this may have listened, few (if any) in Hollywood have. To be fair, it’s hard to hear the strategic advice of an outsider when your conference rooms are packed full of Ivy League fraternity brothers harrumphing their sycophancy in your ears. And boy are those free sushi lunches on the 52nd floor hella distracting! Now, as a consequence of years of corporately delinquent negligence and continual narcissistic anal gazing, Paramount is being sold for parts, Warner Bros. Discovery has lost 71% of its value, Disney (after an historically disastrous and permanently damaging non-succession) is AGAIN looking for a successor, Fox Corporation is reenacting (verbatim) the last season of Succession, and Netflix is playing a shell game with their failing ad business. So what’s a Media business to do now? More importantly, what the fuck happens NEXT? MARTIN GROVE'S WEEKEND BOXOFFICE BUZZ: Now playing below -- a quick look at the upcoming July 4th holiday weekend.   . Universal/Illumination Entertainment's PG rated animated sequel DESPICABLE ME 4 is opening 7/3 at about 4,000 theatres. It's expected to generate colorful boxoffice fireworks with around $140M for five days -- or more, which is usually the case these days! The RT critics are haters at 63%, but that won't keep families away. It's tracking best with men under 25 (13 points over norm) and next best with women under 25 (12 points over norm).   . Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions' R rated Indian action crime drama KILL is opening wide 7/4. Pundits are guessing $4-6M for four days. RT critics love it at 95%, but that's based on just 20 reviews.
