African leaders, executives, tech and financial innovators, creative institutions, policymakers, and government leaders have been urged to connect Africa and set global social and economic goals to foster greater inclusion and equality. This was highlighted during the Africa Soft Power Summit, themed “Africa Now: Connecting Africa—Shaping the Global Social and Economic Priorities of Our Time”, that commenced on May 29 and will go on till May 31 at the Kigali Serena Hotel. This summit is happening in Kigali for the third consecutive year. As the founder of a leading community for #CommsPros in Africa, The Comms Avenue, Adedoyin Jaiyesimi has unique insights into the challenges facing African communicators - and also about how they are dealing with the challenges affecting the entire sector - budgets, leadership prioritization, and the under-resourcing that often shows up as “teams of one.” This exchange I had with her in The Changing The Terms podcast was quite telling: Mike “So you talked about the scope and diversity of Africa, that you have 54 countries, you've got numerous languages, you've got an immense geography. I recall a map where you actually crammed inthe United States, China, Argentina, and most of the major European countries, and you still didn't cover all of Africa. “People have this distorted sense of both the population and the diversity there. How can a team of one function across all of those geographies?” Adedoyin “It's literally almost impossible. Literally almost impossible. And that's why, you know, this conversation that we're having, I'm saying, look, there needs to be advocacy. So one of the things that I say to communications professionals that find themselves in that position, you need to speak to your senior leader because they are assuming that one person can do this. Now, that assumption is wrong based on the knowledge that they have. “You, as the communications advisor that should be working in a strategic role should be able to say this cannot work. We need regional communications advisors. We need people on ground to support this information. Otherwise, we're going to miss the mark. We've seen organizations go into crisis because messaging didn't land well in a particular language. So in English, it came up well, and we translate that same thing in another language, totally missed the mark. New York Sept. 2024: Just wrapped up a powerful panel discussion on Cross-Continental Leadership and the Historical Role of Africa: Driving the Shift Towards an Equitable Economy. It was an honor to join renowned sector gurus from Kenya and Senegal for this crucial conversation. While Africa is experiencing remarkable growth, much of it remains concentrated in urban centers. Even within these cities, only a small fraction of the population is actively engaged in driving this transformation. In rural areas, the growth potential is immense—fertile land, human capital, and untapped opportunities abound. Yet, the reluctance to invest, often driven by perceived risks, continues to hinder progress. At the opening ceremony of The Africa CEO Forum 2024, Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of the IFC - International Finance Corporation, posed a critical question: How can Africa swiftly harness the ongoing tech revolution that is rapidly transforming business practices globally?
