I'm not certain how well I express my thoughts on the US Federal government's efforts to improve cybersecurity, but my short answer is "surprisingly well." I think it would come as a surprise to most folks in the industry, including those inside the federal government, that for 30 years the federal government's efforts to improve cybersecurity have gone about as well as anyone should have realistically expected in the first place. What shouldn't surprise anyone is that it hasn't been markedly better at any point along that line. One of the measures of the maturity of the cybersecurity community is how well we integrate the non-technical factors involved. It has never been realistic to expect an organization like the US federal government with all of its momentum and logistics and bureaucracy to fully integrate an obscure emergent technical subject matter like cybersecurity much faster than it has. How well we do or don't understand that says a lot about how well we understand everything involved with making anything secure.

The Texas Data Privacy and Security Act (TDPSA) goes into effect today which gives consumers the right to request information about how companies process their personal data. The law also allows consumers to request that companies correct, delete, or stop using their personal data. Companies must comply with these requests within 45 days and may be fined up to $7,500 if they don't. This is a great presentation by privacy expert Harvey Nusz, CRISC, CGEIT, CISA with an explanation of the details.

A plethora of amazing revelations of whats possible with policy, when you're a StrongDM user. First up? How can you add an MFA prompt to every single resource in your environment. Stop begging your resource vendors to support MFA - just use StrongDM to enforce an MFA prompt whenever anyone accesses that resource, or when they access that resource at a certain time, or when they access that resource from a certain region or.. or...or..
