Bristol Myers Squibb pays $110M to form T-cell therapy pact, helping Prime Medicine, Inc. buy time to advance prioritized pipeline Bristol Myers Squibb is paying Prime Medicine $110 million upfront to develop reagents for ex vivo T-cell therapies. Prime, which could receive a whopping $3.5 billion in milestones, disclosed the deal alongside details of a pipeline prioritization intended to extend its cash runway into the first half of 2026. BMS is partnering with Prime to further its work to unlock the potential of cell therapy in immunology and oncology. In return for the upfront payment, which is split evenly between a cash payment and equity investment, Prime will design optimized Prime Editor reagents for a select number of targets. Takeda inks sweet $1.2B+ deal with Kumquat for immuno-oncology program https://lnkd.in/eTtPuV3X Takeda is offering Kumquat Biosciences the chance to make more than $1.2 billion biobucks in a new exclusive pact that centers around an unnamed immuno-oncology small molecule inhibitor. Kumquat, after running phase 1 trial activities, can grant Takeda global licensing rights to develop and commercialize the asset, according to agreement terms shared April 16. Subject to Kumquat's option, Big Pharma Takeda will then take on responsibility for all development and commercialization activities following phase 1. The selected program can be developed as a monotherapy, combo therapy or both, according to the April 16 release. In exchange, Kumquat is set to make up to $130 million in near-term payments, with the additional chance to grab more than $1.2 billion in future clinical, regulatory and commercial milestones, plus tiered royalties on top of that.

AZ has committed to $80m in non-dilutive funding to Swiss biotech SixPeak Bio, which is developing a bispecific antibody therapy for weight loss. Option for acquisition in 2 years. 👉 AZ aim/ are on track for $80 Billion by 2030 and plan to launch 20 major new medicines before 2030. FDA signs off on Adaptimmune's Tecelra as the first engineered cell therapy for a solid tumor. The first TCR-T therapy in the market. FDA: https://lnkd.in/erXrhNqZ Adaptimmune has won accelerated FDA approval for Tecelra (afami-cel), a treatment for metastatic or unresectable synovial sarcoma. Tecelra’s approval comes with several firsts. It’s the first engineered cell therapy for a solid tumor, the first TCR-T therapy to enter the market, and the first new treatment in the indication in more than a decade. It also is the initial approval for the 16-year-old company, which has attracted and lost partnerships with several pharma giants—including GSK, Astellas and most recently Roche—who were drawn to the potential of Adaptimmune’s unique engineered T-cell receptor (TCR) platform. It enables the engineering of T-cells to target and destroy many types of solid tumor cancers. As the first engineered T-cell therapy for solid tumors, Tecelra marks a significant milestone, not only for the company but also for the advancement of cell therapy. “It’s the first product where we use a lentiviral vector to insert our engineered T-cell receptor into the cell,” John Lunger, Adaptimmune’s chief patient supply officer, explained in an interview. Iovance’s Amtagvi (lifileucel), which was approved by the FDA in February for melanoma, was the first T-cell treatment for solid tumors. The difference with Tecelra is that it is engineered. The biopharma industry is facing a $183 billion patent cliff as major drugs lose exclusivity through 2030, with companies like Amgen, BMS, and Merck most exposed. However, Morgan Stanley analysts highlight a $383 billion opportunity for M&A to address this revenue gap. With challenges like the patent expiration of Amgen’s Prolia, BMS’s Eliquis, and the elephant-in-the-room - Merck's Keytruda that generated $25 billion in sales last year - companies are leveraging acquisitions to secure their future pipelines. For example, Amgen’s $27.8 billion Horizon buyout and BMS’s acquisition spree of Karuna, Mirati, and RayzeBio underscore the role of M&A in mitigating risks. As competition for innovative assets intensifies, it is likely that the M&A will be more and more prominent. In fact Morgan Stanley's report estimates that Big Pharma has over $380 billion available for making deals.
