It's so disheartening to see the way predators are circling the developers coming out of bootcamps and other "get rich quick" themed "training programs." As has been said, many of these bootcamps push devs out with little to no real skills into companies who have already agreed to put in a great deal of "on the job training" *because they know you're vulnerable.* When you come out of a bootcamp, you *are not* ready to work and they *know* this. With the advent of narrow AI making this grift even easier to sell, since they can hand these new devs something that makes their programs "work" and shove them out the door, I'm genuinely worried for what's going to happen to the developers coming into this environment. If you're feeling alone and afraid, I do not want to be the person telling you to "stay the path, it's going to be okay." You could have been, or could be vulnerable to be, manipulated by these sort of people. A career in tech is something that's going to take you years to set up, at the very least, and if you can't make that kind of investment, you're going to need to find a way to feed yourself in the meantime because there are sharks circling you *everywhere*. I love this work. I love what I do. I know this is a good career and some people are going to be very happy doing it. If you *aren't* happy doing it, you shouldn't. Do not believe people who say you can get in and make tons of money with very little training, because they're *always* selling you something. Do the work. Put in the hours. Build the tools. Don't believe anyone who tells you it's easy. You can make it, but there aren't shortcuts.

Want to stand out from the crowd? THIS is how you do it. THIS is how you show you are better than the next person. Last week I had the privilege to speak to a PACKED HOUSE on the importance of testing code -- specifically in JavaScript with the Jest framework. I really do suggest any students in school, job hunting, or early career should learn how to test. Not necessarily writing tests for monoliths, but starting small. Maybe with some of the code you already have. Luckily, I went first so you don't need to go far to find it. For those that took a coding bootcamp and are currently experiencing issues with landing a job, here’s what helped me get a job after my bootcamp: 1. Find a role that is not only looking for juniors, but also has a tech stack that you learned in the bootcamp. 2. Once one is complete, find the Hiring Manager/Recruiter responsible for the role that you’re wanting to apply to. 3. Connect with them and establish a relationship. This is very important because speaking directly with this individual will allow you to get straight to the “meat and bones” at hand and establish whether or not you’re a good fit. 4. Afterwards, and probably the most important step, go DIRECTLY to the companies website and apply on their site. DO NOT APPLY THROUGH LINKEDIN. 5. Have a spread sheet created that tracks where you applied, the recruiter you spoke with, the date you replied, and then have 2-3 columns that track your follow-up attempts with the hiring manager regarding your application. 6. Go outside and keep doing your favorite hobbies. Hopefully one of those hobbies include building new apps with your tech stack so you remain ‘current’. There’s no point to all of this if you can’t maintain a level of mental clarity while dealing with a process that WILL include a lot of rejections. Because, if I'm being honest, the rejections do NOT end once you get a job. Your code will reject you as well, at times lmao. Cheers, and good luck!!! I have had several people reach out to me lately inquiring about coding bootcamps, from here and my YouTube. Here is how I would decide on which bootcamp you should attend: 1. Think about what technology you want to use. No point in doing a data bootcamp if you want to be a developer. 2. Understand that bootcamps are a hell of a lot to take on. There is a lot of information being thrown at you in a relatively short period. 3. We all learn differently. Reach out to the bootcamp and ask about their teaching styles and ask about any reservations you have. 4. Inquire about their career services. Most are quite lacking here so it is worth digging in and seeing what they offer. 5. Think about how much time you have to dedicate, as most are full-time. IF you have a family or other commitments you may need more support from them. What would you add?

#react #redux trying to update a pay rate if a pay rate already exists, or establish one if it doesn't. I'm not sure this structure will work, but there is a thrill in finally coming to the right answer. Earlier today I figured out how to get the existing pay rates to display after a couple of days of banging my head against the wall. The solution: use #redux and instead of making API call. I was overthinking because errors make me think I have to do more, instead of doing less. Hopefully, lesson learned.

👀 The Great Job Hunt Chronicles: A Vue.js Developer's Tale 🎢 🚀 So, it's been a looooong time since I embarked on this epic journey called "Job Hunting." My weapon of choice? Vue.js! 🛡️ Yes, that elusive tech with opportunities rarer than unicorn sightings. 🦄 But guess what? Despite the odds, I've been landing interviews! 🎉 Nailing them, even! 🎯 However, there's this curious phenomenon where HR seems to have forgotten basic human decency. 🕵️‍♂️ Imagine this: you prepare, you ace the interview, you wait...and then...crickets 🦗🦗 Dear HR folks, a quick tip: the suspense is not thrilling. Jr full-stack devs….always push() changes before refresh()ing. Thankfully found and fixed the bug in 8hrs or less. It’s the largest codebase I’ve worked on. Maybe 10k-20k lines at this point. So rewarding! #TypeScript #React #EventLoop #JavaScript

Tailwind is an awesome utility-first CSS framework. I've found myself really enjoying it but have also identified some potential challenges when creating larger components, especially within a design system that includes multiple variants of a single component. My second feature has been PR’d! My masonry grid component is currently under review. The process has been an absolute joy to get comfortable with and figure out. Essentially, we have a components library where all components are created. We then import those components into the production-level web app, and it's there that they get used. I typically build the component from the ground up. Once it's working, I tend to refactor the code. Next, I create a Storybook component for the newly created component and then move on to tests. Before pushing my branch, I locally test it within the production app and integrate it as we envision the component would be used to ensure it works fully. Once that’s all said and done, I send out a message and wait for the green light to push. Now, I wait for my PR to be reviewed and see if it's up to par with my colleague's standards. It’s amazing to see the complexity of large, professional projects in action and navigate the process to get comfortable with it. This experience has taught me so much about project design and general “good behavior” while working in a large codebase. Not to mention, I'm super honored to say that 80% of the UI is being made by me.
