Most brands design to the fashion not the game! I design from the point of the golf swing / baseball pitch or strike - that is How to make layers offer zero friction. It’s a design process not dissimilar to a coach improving a players performance by spotting the flaws in the players current abilities and identifying technical improvements that need to happen to get the player to the next level. I design from an analysis of human rotational motion in explosive high repetition twisting motions- what makes it easier in the toughest of conditions for the player to execute the pitch/strike or swing. Still stormy time ahead for the cycling industry: We can see that both 2022 and 2023 were brutal for many cycling brands. On average, 2021 was the peak in terms of revenue, with 2022 and 2023 dropping around 20% each year. This puts most brands’ revenue around 2019 volumes. The cycling industry experienced a significant surge in demand during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, with U.S. bike sales increasing by 64% to $5.4 billion in 2020. However, this boom was short-lived. By 2023, sales had declined to $4.1 billion, marking a 24% drop from the 2020 peak. In the United Kingdom, the market faced similar challenges. The Bicycle Association's mid-year report for 2023 indicated an 8% decrease in mechanical bike sales and a 12% decline in electric bike sales compared to the previous year. The European market also faced setbacks. In France, bicycle sales fell by 14% in 2023, with 2.2 million new bikes sold. Despite this, the total market value only decreased by 5.5% to just over €3.4 billion, suggesting a shift towards higher-priced models or accessories. Several factors contributed to these declines: Supply Chain Disruptions: Pandemic-related issues led to inventory shortages, followed by an oversupply as demand waned, resulting in significant price reductions. Economic Pressures: Inflation and increased borrowing costs caused consumers to postpone or forgo purchasing new bicycles. Market Saturation: The initial surge in bike purchases during the pandemic led to market saturation, reducing the need for new purchases in subsequent years. Despite these challenges, certain segments, like road high-end models, have shown resilience. For instance, luxury brands like Pinarello and Colnago have maintained strong sales without resorting to discounts. Looking ahead, the industry faces a complex landscape. While some segments may continue to perform well, the overall market is expected to remain subdued in the near term. Brands may need to adapt by focusing on emerging trends, optimizing supply chains, and aligning with evolving consumer preferences to navigate these challenges and all need to reduce their stock to a healthy level.

So many **bad vibes** surround the cycling industry these days in leading industry media, and I've read only a few positive conclusions about this mess. Rapha's challenges with declining market momentum in key markets are not unusual, as the cycling apparel business is hampered by consumer fatigue from overproduction. The same styles are endlessly redesigned, often without much success, in an attempt to sell more and more, while the industry discounts itself into the grave. This issue largely stems from poor merchandising practices by many of the big players, who triggered the downward spiral by winning customers through heavy discounting. But as their sales suddenly declined and inventory piled up, it became clear they were on the path toward insolvency, followed by bankruptcy. An inevitable result of greed… My humble assessment is that we've now passed through the worst of the crisis. If we can just survive the coming winter, I believe things will start to turn around in spring 2025. We opened our business at the worst possible time, believing the industry offered endless opportunities (it didn’t). But with a fierce desire to do things differently and with our passion 110% intact, we've navigated through the worst crisis in living memory, holding onto the belief that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
