Agency vs. Corporate: This question constantly rears its head throughout a marketer’s career. Which side of the fence do you fall on? What is ‘unfair’ in marketing? Maybe a better question is, what’s ‘fair’? John Dutton, my favorite character in Yellowstone, said: “Fair means one side got exactly what they wanted in a way the other side can’t complain about.” At first, that sounded unbalanced to me—far from the fairness we’re taught to believe in: just, equal, and unbiased. But when I thought about it again, I could see the point. Humans are selfish. We’re not naturally just, and we all have biases. I see the same in marketing. Fairness is far from perfection. It’s about a value exchange where both sides are satisfied. Customers want the best deal, and businesses want profit or growth. Fair is when both sides feel they’ve gained something. Unfair?
