Your team feels restricted in decision-making. How can you empower them to achieve greater autonomy?
Your team needs a framework of decision-making to be successful. There are times when your team has to act without you, and if you hold on to every decision, it slows productivity while also discouraging your team. Create a framework for when a team member can decide to move forward without you. Give clear expectations for when you need to get involved, and don't get crazy when a bad decision is made. This all comes back to building a relationship with your team, which fosters trust.

You're guiding a senior team member. How can you offer feedback without diminishing their leadership?
Feedback is always best when it comes from a place of respect. Respect is not instant, it's a result of a relationship formed over time with consistent and thoughtful conversations. It's a commitment that we all need to take seriously. Take time to get to know your leaders and understand what makes them tick, how they like feedback, and what motivates them. Once you invest in your team, feedback is so much easier, no matter the topic, because you have a trusted relationship. Never underestimate the power of building a strong relationship upfront because it could come in very handy in the tough situations down the line.

Your team member questions your leadership. How will you regain their trust and respect?
This will happen from time to time, but you can mitigate the possibility of a team member doubting your leadership. Somewhere along the line, you became a boss and not a leader. You have failed to customize your leadership to the individual, providing people with the support they need to feel successful. Once you hit the point of questioning, it's time to self-reflect and listen to the feedback without getting defensive. It's important to devise an action plan for effectively leading team members. This plan should prioritize transparency and honesty in your approach. You won't agree with everyone, and that's okay, but making every effort to make it work is what really counts.
