Shhh....let it go. Let it go. 😅 What worked then may not work now. Users change. *People* change. Being a solid PMM includes knowing when and where to pivot. Whether it's being a little more flexible with how you define your primary target audience (S/O to Stanley 1913), or maybe shifting your product's positioning--it's worth a try. Keeping your KPIs front and center, look at which parts of your marketing strategy would benefit the most from a makeover. The results may surprise (and humble) you.

I'm a big fan of Beam Content 💡and jumped at the opportunity to participate in their Content Gap survey (and it's very rare for me to take a survey that takes more than about a minute). Now the results of their survey are out in their "Closing the Content Gap" report. There are tons of great takeaways--one that stood out to me is that 69% of content marketers and 72% of non-content marketers believe content marketing will become more important moving forward. With GenAI tools making it easy to create mediocre content, I see the demand increasing for high-quality content marketing driven by research and subject matter expertise. The report has a ton of other great insights about how content marketers and GTM work together, how teams measure content success, and how content marketers keep up with audience preferences. "20.5 hours in meetings." Yep, that's what my calendar said last week. And if you're a marketing professional, or really anyone who works in tech, you know this isn’t shocking. Between campaign planning, creative brainstorming, and cross-functional syncs, our world is a nonstop stream of Zoom calls and Slack messages. But here’s the thing: nothing compares to face-to-face interactions. Don’t worry, this isn’t a “back to the office to protect our real-estate investment” post. I’m talking about the energy and creativity that comes from being in the same room with someone—whether at an industry event, off-site, or even just grabbing coffee. As marketers, we thrive on collaboration and idea generation. And to be honest, I sometimes forget how a casual conversation can turn into my next big idea. (How do I forget that??) It's easy to forget just how much more you can get out of those real-life interactions than from the confines of a virtual meeting. Let’s be real—even the occasional awkward silences in person can feel more productive than the endless cycle of muted mics and “you’re on mute” moments online. When you're a "client side" marketing professional, diving into a full rebrand isn't a daily thing. I'm so proud of my team here at Direct Energy and the many folks who've put in countless hours to make this change happen across so many channels and customer touchpoints. Direct Energy has been serving Albertans now for 20 years, and was actually founded in my hometown of Toronto in 1986. So why a rebrand? Why now? Direct Energy is truly unique for this category in that we operate across Canada and the US under a number of very different regulatory frameworks. We needed a shared but flexible brand identity that would ensure we can serve and communicate to our varied audiences - in what can be a very complex industry to understand. When I joined this company just over two years ago, I was really impressed by the team here in Alberta. Because utilities are a "necessary evil", I joke that I went from one industry people love to hate (banking) to another. But ever since, we've been on a journey to help educate Albertans while providing the best service possible, especially when times are tough like they are right now. Health privacy is breached every day online. Most Americans don’t realize their Amazon info is being aggregated with Google searches, news browsing, FB/Instagram/TikTok posts & more. So our entire online experience, including health, is being sifted for marketing. “Go see what the competitor is doing.” I’ve heard it too many times in my career. We’re pressed for time, need new copy, have a website update, building emails—anything. And then the shortcut appears: copy what’s already out there. Sounds smart, right? ...not really Sometimes you should reinvent the wheel. → Your competitor’s audience is not your audience. → Copying skips learning what really works for you. → You miss out on true originality. → Your brand loses its unique voice. → You become second-best, not first. Sure, the top-down request to “just copy” seems easy. But long-term success? That takes fresh thinking. New ideas. Risk. Next time someone says, “do what they’re doing,” remember: Your brand can’t be #1 by duplicating #1. Build your marketing foundations around your customers and what you do best → not what somebody else does best. #metoomarketing

My feed is already inundated with #INBOUND24 recaps, but I can’t not add one more post. As a first-time attendee (and a hopeful repeat attendee), I left Boston feeling inspired about my career, relieved that we (marketers) are all asking the same questions and with so many ready-to-go takeaways INBOUND. Three common threads during conference educational sessions and conversions with fellow attendees: 🤖 On AI: We’ve just scratched the surface of AI. While most of us are using it to help with content ideation, not enough are using it as our virtual assistant — our assistant to offload the mundane and gives us the space and time to focus our energies on being creative. 💻 On Content and Meaurement: Stop creating content that your audience doesn’t like (and also that we don’t like). We all know we shouldn’t do it, but we keep doing it anyway — and a lot of it has to do with external factors. TRUST is a KPI, COMMUNITY is a KPI, CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE is a KPI . . . and to improve those KPIs, being human, relatable and different is non-negotiable. 💡On Leadership: Start inviting dissent into ideas and removing barriers to expressing unique perspectives/lived experiences. As a leader, listen to your intuition and go with your gut, but equip teams with the tools, the goals and the confidence needed to allow them to let them learn, find their voice and chart their own unique path forward. Last Month, a frustrated nonprofit client came to me with a problem (...their Google Ads Grant were getting zero traction) "We're barely getting any impressions” The veteran's dance studio director told me. “We’re using maximized conversions but nothing's working." After a quick account review… I knew exactly what the problem was - they were restricting Google's algorithm. Here's what I did: 1️⃣ First, we switched from maximized conversions to Target CPA bidding. Most nonprofits get this wrong - they stick to basic bid strategies that limit their reach. 2️⃣ Then, I did something unheard of - I set an extremely high Target CPA ($500-$800). Why so high? 🤔 Because this tells Google's algorithm it's okay to explore and spend more to find the right users. Most people set it too low and choke their campaigns. 3️⃣ Finally, I gave it 2 weeks to learn. This breathing room lets Google’s algo to find patterns in user behavior and optimize accordingly. And the RESULTS is: ✅ Impressions shot up 200% ✅ 26 new site button clicks ✅ 5 dance class sign-ups Two weeks ago, they were invisible on Google. Now they're reaching hundreds of potential students every day. The secret? Sometimes you need to loosen the reins to let your campaigns truly perform. And budgeting and resource planning isn't the easiest. So how can you conquer it? Libraries More than just books As someone whose daughter loves visiting the library, I know firsthand how essential these spaces are for learning and community. When she was younger, the "tea and toys" sessions were a lifeline for us both—providing a space to connect, learn, and play. Libraries are crucial for teenagers studying for exams, parents seeking activities for their children, and individuals needing a warm, welcoming space. Technology can play a key role in supporting libraries through digital transformation, ensuring they remain accessible and relevant. But beyond technology, we must promote the diverse services libraries offer, from study spaces to community events. How do we let everyone know the value of their local library? Dichotomies. I love using dichotomies for both self development and as a teaching tool.  Used correctly they provide insights into opposing views in an attempt to find common ground.  When paired with sarcasm and exaggeration, dichotomies can bring levity to controversial topics. One such controversial topic in Learning and Development (L&D) is The Perfect L&D Solution surrounding a given topic. So let’s have some fun using the dichotomy of L&D (the creators) and Operations (the target audience). The Perfect Training Solution, as described by a passionate and creative L&D professional, might go something like this: - This topic is important, so first we’d like to shoot a video with the CEO giving their thoughts on the initiative and tying it into corporate culture and growth. We have a professional production crew we can hire for $10000 per day, and should be able to get everything we need in 3 days. We can have the video fully produced and ready within 2 weeks.  - Next, we’d like to use virtual reality to create an immersive experience to introduce the topic in a 1-hour self-guided lesson. We’ll need to purchase new equipment for about $20000.. It will take us about 3 months to create the VR experience. - We want to follow that up with 6 1-hour instructor-led sessions over the course of 6 weeks.  Between each session there will be learning cohorts that are assigned activities that will take 2-3 hours a week to complete.  We’ll need to purchase custom social learning software for $30000.  It will take us about 8 weeks to create the instructor-led and cohort learning. - We’ll need surveys filled out after every activity to make rapid changes to the program if there’s dissatisfaction. We’ll have a series of learning assessments to check everyone’s progress as they learn. It will take us about 3 weeks to create the surveys and assessments. - Once we go live, we want to have an audit program that tracks skill adoption over the course of 4 weeks with on-demand coaching sessions to solidify all skills learned in training.   - Finally, we can measure the effectiveness of the training by comparing before and after KPIs for quality and cost. The Perfect L&D Solution, as described by an Operations Manager, is more like this: - I want all relevant information to fit on a poster.   - You can put the poster at the entrance to the building, but I don’t want anyone to have to stop to read it. Slowing their pace should be sufficient.   - I expect instant adoption and perfect application as soon as they walk by the poster.   - If adoption isn’t instant and perfect and we don’t see the expected results, it’s L&D’s fault and we should’ve never wasted our time. Sound a bit ridiculous, but also familiar? The solution is somewhere in the middle (of course), but negotiating the ideal is complex.

I love guest posting, and just having friends in high places. Back in the early days when I was still "re-inventing #localseo", and lived out in Palo Alto, CA right near Google HQ, I remember introducing a girl that was a friend, nothing more, to a VP at Google and they hit it off. We were all at a hackathon in San Francisco together and Google was rolling out Google Plus at the time and they needed publishers to promote it. I took one guy friend (my ride) and this girl who was interested in hackathons and was a good friend of mine for two years before moving. Her and the Google guy got married!!! They moved away and I lost touch with her, honestly. But I didn't lose touch with my friend at Google. And to this day when I request a backlink, I always get it.
