The Third Virtual National Health Care Transparency and No Surprises Act Summit ✅ April 16-19, 2024 Part 2 of 2 Aneesh Chopra shared how important it is for consumers to have access to health data, prices, and the resources necessary to understand quality. He also advocated for the standardization of Good Faith Estimates (GFEs) so a hip replacement, for example, would have the same bundled set of billing codes. Ahmed Marmoush, Susan Dentzer and many others shared that you can’t have price transparency without quality as the two must be taken into account in order to understand value. Justin Leader shared a heavy lift taking place in healthcare literacy and expanded on this by saying that consumerism can’t work for people who are unable to make an informed decision. Comments on the Machine Readable Files (MRFs) unearthed several challenges… Christopher Whaley and others talked about the health system Machine Readable Files (MRFs) being less complete, reliable and accurate than the posted MRFs from insurance companies. David Muhlestein in discussion with Niall Brennan shared how the machine readable price transparency files (MRFs) are riddled with ghost codes and other unusable data points. The pair shared the sentiment that price and quality aren’t correlated in healthcare. Kristyn Ulrich of CommonSpirit Health shared that the MRF framework doesn’t appreciate the complexity that occurs on the claim level which is how hospitals are paid. She wasn’t alone in expressing the difficulties that come with evolving and misaligned federal and state requirements. Today I'm both grateful and wondering how NPR, KFF Health News and the Newsom Administration missed an opportunity to promote the state TA Marketplace giving CBO's FREE expertise to sustain and scale their services. Just Whole Care is helping CBO's just like the ones named, provide and sustain intensive care coordination (aka ECM) and asthma remediation - as well as other services addressing physical, behavioral, and essential needs through integrated, equitable, trauma-informed care, impact measurement, and systems change. It's ALL thanks to the TA Marketplace (TAM) neglected by this piece. We're talking small, Black-owned CBO's leveling up with measurement-based, equitable care and new payment methods near overnight; at least by Medicaid standards. The TAM will be critical in light of difficult budget cuts the Administration proposed last week to maternal child health, behavioral health, and public health. (Thoughts to come as details arrive.) So let's make sure we and the media ALL give credit where it's due. When hospitals are organized into multi-facility systems, it's very difficult to ensure that #Medicaid funds targeted by complex formulas to the safety net hospitals in the system that serve low-income patients and communities actually are used to improve care in those communities. The AHRQ NOFO for Health Extension Cooperatives The Cavalry Arrives Just in Time The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) released a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) on five-year grants for state-based Health Extension Cooperatives (HECs), for up to $25million each state, up to 15 states. This is a big deal. It comes at a critical time as many states are looking at worsening health status, soaring healthcare costs and a workforce crisis in primary care and behavioral health. The Healthcare Extension Service program is designed to enhance healthcare delivery through improvements in healthcare policy, payment systems, and clinical practice, and to reduce healthcare disparities especially among people who receive Medicaid, are uninsured, or are medically underserved. This set of cooperative state grants will be quickly followed by additional funding to establish a National Evaluation Center to conduct evaluations of the Healthcare Extension Cooperatives’ activities. This will also support ongoing learning and a National Coordinating Center to provide the support structure that will ensure these activities are integrated and aligned. The concept behind this program comes from the very successful publicly supported Agricultural Extension program. That program is described by the Association of Public Land Grant Universities as: “Extension provides trusted, practical education to help people, businesses, and communities solve problems, develop skills, and build a better future. Campus-based faculty members are disciplinary specialists with doctoral degrees whose primary responsibility is to develop curricula that translate science-based research results into language (written, verbal, and electronic) appropriate for targeted audiences. County-based educators work with local citizens and interest groups to solve problems, evaluate the effectiveness of learning tools, and collect grassroots input from prioritizing future research. By living and working in communities, county educators respond to local needs, build trust, and engage effectively with citizens.”. With this program mentioned above we have continually educated and supported our farmers and fed the nation. Shifting the financial model alone is not sufficient for the transition - the care delivery, workforce, and many other pieces of the ecosystem with which PCPs interact also need to adjust accordingly. Funding to allow for the startup costs of transformation must be made available. A comprehensive analysis from The Commonwealth Fund: To encourage participation, practitioners say upfront payments, investment in the primary care workforce, and less emphasis on simplistic quality measures are needed, as well as more support for practices to provide accessible, comprehensive care. #primarycare #integratedcare #teambasedcare #healthcare #healthcareonlinkedin

🎯 👩‍⚕️ Are Health professionals truly focused on patients? 👨‍⚕️ 🎯 This was a key question last monday at the fireside chat hosted by Ariadna Masó, CEO at SANNO, and Mark Duman, Chief Patient Officer at MD Healthcare Consultants, and held at the Barcelona Health Hub. They pointed out that while most professionals would answer "yes" to that question, many patients would disagree; and invited the attendants to discuss further about this huge gap. Our CEO, Daniel Esteban-Ferrer, PhD, participated as an expert in #SpatialComputing emphasising the following three crucial aspects regarding to patient-centered strategies: 1. Spatial Computing is a great tool to adhere patients to their treatments (i.e. Trauma, Strokes, Parkinson, etc.) 2. It will save time and stress to medical doctors which can be dedicated to personalised patient attention 3.
