Healthcare providers and payers are more willing to invest in advanced healthcare IT! A recent study by Bain & Company and Klas Research, titled 'Healthcare IT Spending: Innovation, Integration and AI,' reveals this growing trend. Over the past year, 75% of the providers and payers have increased their healthcare IT investments to streamline operations and reduce clinician workload. According to the report, the most critical investment category is IT infrastructure and services, followed by clinical workflow optimization and then data platforms and interoperability. 🚀 Upscaling Generative AI as an Enterprise Platform 🥌 In my experience, adopting Generative AI (GenAI) transcends a mere application choice; it represents a strategic enterprise-wide platform decision that demands careful consideration and alignment with organizational goals. As enterprises embark on their GenAI journey, it's vital to treat scaling efforts with the same strategic approach as previous enterprise-wide initiatives, like cloud adoption. To successfully scale GenAI, consider forming a steering committee that brings together cross-functional stakeholders. This committee will oversee strategic planning, resource allocation, and change management, ensuring a holistic approach to adoption. Have you been part of a steering committee for enterprise-wide initiatives? If so, you will relate with this approach. Looking back at cloud adoption a decade ago, we can draw parallels to today's GenAI landscape. Just as organizations needed to re-architect their IT infrastructure and embrace new workflows for cloud integration, scaling GenAI requires a similar mindset shift and strategic planning. We should start by looking at business processes. Engage with stakeholders from various LoB (lines of business)—clinical, IT, and business—to foster cross-functional collaboration and gather diverse input. Just like we had to explain the business benefits of cloud to everyone during cloud adoption, scaling GenAI warrants similar motion. Educate & Communicate. Don't make assumptions. Adopt an agile approach to development, testing, and deployment, allowing for continuous learning and improvement as you scale GenAI applications. There is so much to be done. My preferred execution model is Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Program Increment planning. The goal is to align everyone on a shared vision, prioritize features, identify dependencies, and create a detailed plan for the upcoming Program Increment (PI), which is a time box of 8-12 weeks. Lastly, don't forget the importance of data governance, quality and privacy. Address any challenges and comply with regulations to build trust and pave the way for successful adoption. I have witnessed numerous organizations postponing implementing a comprehensive data strategy and robust data governance practices during previous transformation initiatives, such as cloud adoption. Large Healthcare Technology Consulting Firms vs. Smaller Specialized Consultancies As I have discussed in previous posts, the field of technology consulting, and healthcare technology consulting in particular, is currently experiencing a downturn. Year-over-year revenues for healthcare consulting are declining, and this situation is especially challenging for smaller firms compared to their larger counterparts. Larger consultancies have the advantage of deeper cash reserves, allowing them to endure economic downturns with greater ease than smaller boutique firms. However, it is important to remember the reasons you have chosen to work with smaller firms in the past. Their specialized expertise in areas such as Revenue Cycle Management, Acute Care, or Clinical Systems Interoperability has been directly relevant to the specific issues you have encountered with your systems. Larger firms often apply generic solutions that may not be the best fit for your unique needs. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain relationships with your boutique vendors and support them whenever possible. If these specialized firms disappear, you might find yourself without the precise expertise you need when challenges arise.

Healthcare systems today are up against challenges of an unprecedented scale. Chronic disease incidence has continued to escalate, with 74% of deaths worldwide in 2019 attributed to such diseases as compared to 67% in 2010. The World Health Organization estimates that if the trend continues, by around 2050 NCDs will account for 86% of annual deaths, or some 77 million lives lost. Meanwhile, global spending on health reached a staggering US$9.8 trillion in 2021, representing 10.3% of global GDP, driven in part by the pandemic as well as rising inflation and global economic conditions. In the face of these growing challenges, the need for all stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem – from hospitals to policymakers to solutions providers – to collaborate and innovate has never been stronger.
