Can I fix my excess inventory with AI? Well... maybe, but first step is data foundations. Let me explain. Excess inventory can be painful. An additional 1% in excess on a 100m euros inventory is a straight 1m negative P&L impact. But excess inventory can have multiple root causes, and thus it can be hard to fix. Data & Analytics can have a significant impact in reducing excess inventory by providing visibility and transparency on root causes. Imagine management having visibility on excess inventory root causes broken down by: - Misjudged Sales forecast - Incorrect safety stocks - Incorrect MOQs/SPQs - Changes in demand patterns - Overproduction - And more... This kind of visibility would help to: 1) understand what is happening and why we are producing too much inventory 2) align accountabilities and who needs to fix what 3) making sure agreed actions are driving the right results Simple stuff, really, but it can be hard for many companies to have this visibility because they don't have proper data foundations. And what about AI? You might ask. If you collect enough data, you can train an AI to automatically label excess inventory items on root causes. A big problem with root causes is that they are hard to determine even manually sometimes, a robust model can make this process seamless and fast.

How to score a Demand Forecasting model? Should we only look at the accuracy score or there is more to it? We face this question while developing a robust demand forecasting model for retailer. My thoughts to it: A problem related to many forecasting metrics (like WAPE or MSE) is that they are not linked to the process they’re used in. For example, if forecast accuracy as measured by 1-WAPE is 48%, is that a good or a bad result? If it’s a bad result, does it matter? Say you have a product-location with average daily sales of 0.23 pcs. Forecast bias is acceptable at 101%, while forecast accuracy (1-WAPE) is only 15%. But remember that you also need to consider the use case – replenishment for this product location is driven by batch size and other replenishment parameters. The not-so-good forecast accuracy of 15% is acceptable for direct replenishment needs since it does not directly affect the ordering frequency or accuracy.
