Can’t believe I’m already halfway done with my internship at Applied Materials! Here are some of the coolest things I’ve experienced throughout the first 6 weeks of my internship: ⛳ Applied Summer Games: Full of fun activities such as spikeball, corn hole, kan jam, and lots of FREE food (My favorite). Got to network with other interns and create memories together. 🎙️ Fireside Chat With CEO: Had the opportunity to learn from Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson. Gained insights on how Applied Materials has created an impact in the semiconductor industry and the technology world. In addition, I would like to share a few keys takeaways I have learned so far: 📝 Take notes even if you’re just sitting in a meeting. You never know when those notes will come in handy. Writing notes also helps you better retain information that was covered throughout the meeting. Personally, I like to use a physical notebook to document everything. 🎯 Keep track of your work and present your progress to your manager/supervisor. Lots of time, managers could be busy and might forget to dedicate time to follow up with your internship progress. Scheduling meetings with your manager to go over what you have accomplished will show that you are well organized and goal oriented. 🙋‍♂️ Ask detailed questions. Utilize your free time to do in-depth research on the project or task you’re working on. Then, spend some time with your manager or team members to discuss the questions you gathered during the process. Oftentimes, you’ll find yourself learning a lot more than just listening from peers. My Experience as an Intern After recently graduating with an Economics degree from San Jose State University this past semester, I wanted to share two of the most incredible experiences I have had in my last year. I have been fortunate to work as an intern in two different areas. I would like to share my experiences in market research and public policy for sustainability. During my time as a market research intern for Sutter Health, I had the opportunity to work with their innovation team on their digital product, Scout. Scout is an app that helps assist users with mental wellness strategies, and additionally connects users to mental health services they may need. I was the lead researcher in a team of 6 tasked with creating a strategy to gain 3,000 app downloads in 6 months. Throughout the 5 weeks I had with my team, we conducted over 150 interviews, and created a social media page with over 4000 engagements. At the end of the internship, we had the opportunity to present our findings to the leadership at Sutter Health’s Innovation center, providing actionable recommendations that would incentivize more users to download the app. In the beginning of the semester, the Scout team at Sutter Health came to our career workshop at Braven with the goal of gaining 3000 user downloads in 6 months. As a market researcher on my team, I lead the process of conducting empathy interviews for our focus group consisting of young adults between the ages of 18 to 25. After synthesizing our results, we found three key insights that Scout would need in order to accelerate its growth. One, by reducing the stigma surrounding mental health with a community presence, increasing the credibility and reliability of Scout, and the other by creating an engaging marketing message, potential users would be highly incentivized to download the app. With these insights, we decided to create an impactful web content to advertise Scout on various media platforms, including TikTok, Youtube, and Instagram. We didn’t stop there. In order to build a strong sense of community, we wanted to create a connection that would encourage others to join the cause. Not only did we want to incentivize downloads, we wanted users to be a part of a movement. We created Scout-branded bracelets that current users and potential users could wear to connect with others and show their friends. These prototypes would additionally be given QR codes that would make downloading Scout quick and simple. Contributing to Scout’s growth proved to be an amazing learning experience, and I am grateful for the team at Sutter Health for giving me the opportunity in my last semester. I highly recommend everybody to download Scout, and begin your mental wellness journey!

Summer Internship Summary 🙌 Recently, I completed a three-month on-site summer internship at Neurava Inc. as a UX&UI Designer. We focused on developing wearable devices to monitor epilepsy. In this startup, I was fortunate to work with a team of creative and dedicated colleagues, Jay Shah, Vivek Ganesh, Trevor Meyer, and other interns. As the sole designer, I not only improved my UX&UI design skills and decision-making abilities but also had the opportunity to communicate directly with developers and the CEO, deepening my understanding of front-end and back-end integration as well as company development. During the internship, I honed my ability to manage projects in a real industry setting. Unlike school projects, we had to deal with real-world data and needs, and the seriousness of epilepsy required us to be more cautious and take on greater responsibility. While designing the website and app, I had significant creative freedom, but I also had to understand the needs of different user groups, independently gather UX-related information, compare and iterate on solutions, and make final design decisions. Additionally, I needed to focus on every detail within limited time constraints, considering every icon and every click's navigation path, ensuring that users could understand the interface and that the information was not overwhelming. This experience enhanced my comprehensive thinking abilities and taught me the importance of minimalistic design. When designing interfaces, my communication with engineers and developers made me realize that designers are essentially "dancing with shackles"—seemingly identical interfaces may hide different data processing methods behind the scenes, requiring us to optimize efficiency while considering multiple factors. Designers also serve as the "bridge" of the product, combining practical features, smooth flow, and aesthetic UI, and delivering them to users and back-end personnel. In various industries, besides possessing strong design skills, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the specific industry background. At the beginning of the internship, I didn't start designing immediately but first studied epilepsy-related knowledge and familiarized myself with the company's progress in wearable device research, laying the foundation for my subsequent work. This internship was an invaluable experience that gave me a deeper understanding of UX&UI design in the medical field. I am truly honored to have had the opportunity to work with such an amazing team.😆 😆 😆

I’m beyond excited to share that I have successfully completed Accenture North America's Product Design Simulation on Forage! This immersive experience has been an incredible journey into the realm of product design, and I’m eager to reflect on what it has meant for my growth as a designer. In this simulation, I explored how the Product Design team can transform user experiences, starting from ideation to execution. My work focused on adding a brand-new feature and iterating on an existing product screen—allowing me to blend creativity with user-focused problem-solving. Through Figma, I was able to visualize and communicate design decisions, creating a more intuitive and engaging user experience. This experience has equipped me with key skills to lead design initiatives and develop impactful solutions tailored to user needs. I learned not only how to optimize features but also how to effectively present and justify design choices to stakeholders—a crucial skill in any creative endeavor. For my final semester Research Project, I was exploring topics when I came across this topic “Gamification of Apps,” and it made me realize just how powerful this approach could be in Marketing. Imagine using game-like features to make even simple app interactions more engaging, drawing people back over and over. Take Duolingo, for instance—its use of streaks and badges transforms language learning into a game, making practice feel like fun rather than a chore. Dunkin'​’ applies similar principles, letting users accumulate points with each purchase that can unlock free items, giving that sense of leveling up. Then there’s Starbucks with its stars system, where each visit brings customers closer to a free treat, making every coffee feel like progress. Seeing how Gamification adds fun to everyday activities and inspires loyalty got me wondering: Have you noticed gamification in the apps you use? Or do you have a favorite brand that does it well?

🔬 From Research to Product Management: Bridging the Gap Reflecting on my recent Product Management internship, I remember being asked this as a kid."What do you want to become when you grow up?" I would respond with the cliche answer "I want to wear a white coat and play with test tubes". As I grew older, that dream evolved into becoming a "Researcher." I didn't fully understand what research entailed, so I continued on a journey to discover it. This journey led me to work in different areas —from fundamental research to Clinical Research and Public Health—each role equipping me with skills that prepared me for the next. The term "research" comes from the Middle French "recherche," meaning "to go about seeking," which is quite apt, aren't we all seeking challenges to make our work more meaningful, leading to fulfillment? I was aware that stagnation deprived me of meaning, and that learning could never stop. Armed with this treasure trove of experiences, I dove into a Product Management internship, where my diverse background proved invaluable. 🎯 How did this translate to Product Management? 💖Empathy: Communicating complex information, addressing concerns with empathy, and building trust were key in guiding patients through difficult decisions in participating in clinical trials. These same skills are now helping me understand client expectations, addressing their concerns, and assure them that their needs will be met and expectations are aligned. 🤔 Analytical mindset: In research, having an analytical mindset means constantly questioning decisions, from methods and chemicals to statistical approaches. Always asking "why". This same curiosity has been helpful in my role, where I assess why certain features are necessary and why some processes are more efficient and time-saving than others. 🚀Tenacity: Research involves enduring lengthy experiments and overcoming setbacks to achieve valid results. In product management, it means persistently iterating on product features and adapting strategies to meet user needs and business goals. Both fields require a steadfast commitment to overcoming challenges and driving success. 🔍Holistic view of things: "The devil is in the details, but don't lose sight of the big picture." In research, a holistic approach means understanding the biological system or patient context to inform research and outcomes. In product management, it involves integrating all aspects of the product lifecycle—such as design, user needs, and market trends—to create a cohesive and successful product. Take a moment to explore how your skills can be transferred to new roles—you might be surprised at how well-equipped you are and how easily some skills can be adapted across various jobs. #productmanagement

For my social media marketing class, we were tasked with researching a topic we’re passionate about, and I couldn’t resist combining my two loves—marketing and computer engineering. I wanted an inside look at social media recommendation algorithms, and it’s been fascinating to explore how platforms like TikTok and Instagram are engineered to optimize user engagement in ways we might not even realize. At the core, platforms like TikTok and Instagram use deep learning, a type of machine learning inspired by how the human brain works, to predict user behavior. These models rely on neural networks, which are layered algorithms designed to process data and identify patterns based on our past interactions. The data, which includes every click, view, and like, is transformed into embeddings—numerical representations of both users and content. These embeddings are placed in a high-dimensional vector space, a kind of map that helps the algorithm determine how similar certain content is to a user’s preferences based on the "distance" between points. Behind the scenes, platforms often combine collaborative filtering—a method where content is recommended based on the behavior of similar users—with matrix factorization, which breaks down large data sets into simpler components to find hidden patterns. This allows the algorithm to predict what new content you’ll enjoy, even if you haven’t directly interacted with anything like it before. For platforms like TikTok, reinforcement learning plays a big role. This is where the algorithm learns by trial and error, continuously adjusting based on real-time user feedback (like how long you watch a video or how quickly you swipe). Familiarizing yourself with the college admissions process is one of the most important things to do over the summer leading up to your senior year. Many people are under the impression that you just apply and wait for a decision, but it is much more complex than that. Early Decision and Early Decision 2: Early decision is the only binding application type. When you apply to a school ED it indicates that that specific university is your top choice. The application is due November 1st, and the decisions come out around mid-December, if you are accepted into the university you ED’d too, you must accept their offer and attend. Alongside that, you must rescind all your applications from other universities. If you are rejected, you can ED 2 to another school. This application is normally due around the beginning of January. You can only ED or ED 2 to one university, this also means you can not do Restrictive Early Action. Early Action and Restrictive Early Action: Early Action is another application type that allows you to submit your application before regular decision and get your decision earlier, between December-February. Early Action, unlike early decision, is not binding. If you get accepted into an Early Action school, you can still decline the offer. There is an additional Early Action type that is not as commonly used, it is the Restrictive Early Action, REA. REA restricts you from EDing to any school, the difference between REA and ED is that it is not binding. If you get accepted into your REA school, you can still decline the offer, unlike your ED where you must attend. Regular Decision: Regular decision is the most common application type. The application is due January 1st and most decisions come out between March and April. Most people who ED’d or REA’d like to wait for the ED and REA decisions before they apply for their regular decisions to save money and time on applications that you’ll have to rescind anyways. Understanding college admissions terms and different aspects of the college admissions process is key to creating a successful college list and reducing your stress during the admissions process. Over the past 6 months, I had the opportunity to work on a data visualization project that utilized data from people counters across BPL's 22 locations. This experience has been both challenging and rewarding, and I am proud of the skills and knowledge I have gained. 🚀 Project Highlights: Developed and presented prototype dashboards in Power BI to visualize foot traffic data. Collaborated with 5 other teammates to create an interactive, user-friendly dashboard for BPL stakeholders.
