Over the past two days, I’ve seen many posts about PMI’s new badge designs—whether commenting on them or even voting on your preferences! I appreciate that these posts are well-intentioned and often enthusiastic, which really shows how passionate you are about PMI. However, many of these posts are mixing the old and new designs, which can cause some confusion. So, although the full suite of new badges won’t be rolled out until early October, I’d like to offer some clarification. The redesign is a direct result of our strategy, PMI:Next. One of the key decisions we’ve made is to elevate the standard of our professional certifications to clearly distinguish them from e-learning courses, “micro-credentials,” and basic certificates of completion. Just as a Harvard MBA or a PhD from Imperial College is not comparable to a Coursera certificate, a professional certification—such as a law license, PMP, or PfMP—should not be equated with a course certificate. In fact, we’ve decided to raise the bar even further for PMI’s professional certifications by ensuring they meet a number of key requirements, such as being backed by a professional standard, requiring a proctored exam separate from the preparation materials, among others. To reflect this shift toward establishing a true Gold Standard for professional certifications, we’ve also chosen to clearly differentiate PMI badges corresponding to professional certifications from other badges, such as course completion certificates, awards, and others. Previously, all badges looked fairly similar. Additionally, the new badges align with the updated aesthetics of our refreshed brand guidelines, which will soon be rolled out across all PMI assets. Below, you’ll find a few examples of this strategy in action, pulled from my own work files (the full rollout is still pending, so I apologize for the low resolution; these were the best I could find tonight). “Executives should encourage their teams to think in two levels as they set goals: …On the first level those would be specific objectives and KPIs that the business unit is directly responsible for. The second, higher-order, level is where strategic objectives of the company as a whole can be found. Kotter wisely stated, "The greatest successes come from having the freedom to fail." This mindset is crucial for driving innovation and growth within organizations. The Importance of Embracing Failure: Failure is a vital part of learning and growth. In business transformation, failure can serve as a catalyst for innovation. Allowing employees the freedom to fail creates an environment where experimentation is encouraged, leading to new ideas and breakthroughs. Driving Innovation Through Failure: Learning from Mistakes: Failure provides insights that success often cannot. Have you heard of VETO organizations? I hadn’t either—until a recent conversation with a transformation executive introduced me to the term. As we talked, I realized I’ve seen quite a few organizations that fit this description. This leader was tasked with driving transformation, introducing agile methodologies, and implementing new ways of working. However, he was frustrated by how slow progress was—not just because he was a one-man team in a 50,000-person company (which, sadly, is far too common) but also because every time he proposed a new approach, a single stakeholder could shut it down. “Let’s run a #designsprint to validate this new proposition with our customers.” 💪💪💪 #Design: "That’s not how we design things here. Veto!" ✅ But later gets frustrated when asked to design a random feature. #Finance: "We don’t have the budget for a week-long workshop. Veto!" ✅ But we can fund months of development that may fail #HR: "We can’t take people off work for five days. Veto!" ✅ But we’ll let them waste their week in back-to-back meetings, hoping for alignment #Engineering: "Design isn’t our job. Veto!" ✅ But then complain when design doesn’t consider technical constraints Still, these organizations make a lot of money and might even be leaders in their industry (think Nokia or Kodak). It’s hard to make the case for change when things are going well—but that’s precisely the time to do it.

Obviously top-quartile members spend more than lower-quartile members but do they spend more than they previously spent or is it merely self-selection? Always worth a decent debate!
