🎟️ Coldplay is coming to Mumbai, and tickets are about to go live on BookMyShow! 🎶 As I’m figuring out how BookMyShow will manage the queue to ensure fairness (and how I can maximize my chances of grabbing those tickets 🏃‍♂️💨), I started thinking about what’s happening behind the scenes. So, while preparing for this “Fastest Finger First” war, here are my thoughts on how BookMyShow might be gearing up for the massive ticket surge: 1️⃣ Virtual Waiting Rooms: To prevent crashes, users are placed into a FIFO (First-In, First-Out) distributed queue. But here's the catch: how do they actually decide who came first? 2️⃣ Precise Timestamps: Each click to "book" is timestamped down to the millisecond (or even nanosecond?). But speed also depends on how fast your request reaches their server! 👉 The kicker: Even if your request is lightning-fast, it may not be the first to hit the server depending on your location. If you’re in Bangalore and someone else is in Mumbai, and the servers are based in Mumbai, their request might reach faster—even if you both clicked at the same time. 🌍 Example: The network latency (round-trip time) between Bangalore and Mumbai is typically 30-40 milliseconds, while for someone in Mumbai, it could be just 5-10 milliseconds. So, if both users click at exactly the same moment, the person in Mumbai has an edge, with their request hitting the server faster by 20-30 milliseconds! In a high-stakes scenario like Coldplay ticket booking, that small difference could mean the difference between getting tickets or missing out! 🥲 3️⃣ Centralized Queue Management: Once you hit the button, your request is sent to a centralized queue (likely using Kafka, Redis, or RabbitMQ). Even if requests come from different servers, the queue maintains global order based on timestamps—so the faster your request hits, the higher up you’ll be. 4️⃣ Concurrency Control & Atomic Operations: With thousands of clicks pouring in, atomic operations (e.g., Redis INCR) ensure no two users claim the same spot. The system processes one request at a time for fairness. 5️⃣ Race Conditions: If two users click at the same millisecond and their requests reach the server at the same time, tie-breakers like randomization might decide who gets ahead. 6️⃣ Scalable Infrastructure: Auto-scaling servers are ready to handle any load, whether it’s 10,000 or 1 million users. 7️⃣ Rate Limiting & Bot Protection: Real fans get priority over bots thanks to rate limiting and DDoS protection, ensuring fairness. 8️⃣ Real-Time Queue Updates: While you wait, WebSockets or Server-Sent Events (SSE) keep you updated on your queue position and other information like how many seats are left, so you know exactly where you stand. It’s fascinating how distributed systems, network latency, and queuing mechanisms shape events like these. Sometimes, it’s not just about speed!

I attended a couple of good product professionals meet-ups last week. Here is a key takeaway from each. I got more gems off of them, but here's two to start with. The first one was organised by Aekyum, brainchild of Debasmita Das and Harkirat Singh. It featured Vellanki Sriharsha on using AI to be a full-stack product manager. Learning - Check out Galileo AI for bringing your wireframe ideas to life. Makes it easier to talk to your design team. The second one was by ProductTank Bangalore. I saw the fabulous Deepak Krishnan in person, telling us about crafting product sense. Learning - Rethink the way you do deconstructions. For UPSC prep, students juggled between multiple sources, making preparation overwhelming and time-consuming. SelfPrep tackled this by offering a one-stop solution that centralized all materials on a single platform. The core reason behind its success? Product Thinking. The Product Thinking Framework That Worked 1. User First: Deeply understood user pain points through direct conversations, gaining insights to build an essential solution tailored to their needs. 2. Focus on the Problem: Instead of chasing trends or adding unnecessary features, I focused exclusively on solving the core problem: consolidating resources. This clarity allowed me to build a product that truly met user needs. 3. Thoughts on “Quality over Quantity, and what it means for growth seekers”: When I was an undergrad at GGSIPU, getting noticed globally felt impossible. I came from a small, close-knit city with a family deeply rooted in medicine, politics, and public service. Growing up, Stanford wasn’t even a name we knew. But I was an aspiring musician (for the first two years of my CS undergrad student life) who then almost unexpectedly fell in love with coding—the thrill of creating something that genuinely helped a user lit a fire in me. From being that “lost” engineering student who didn’t know the world beyond my city, to building a meaningful career in tech, one principle has transformed my journey: quality over quantity. Quality mentors over a high follower count gave me a higher ROI on learning. Fewer, deeper friendships built a real support system. Targeted, intentional job applications led to roles where I truly belonged. Selective reading and focused initiatives delivered measurable outcomes. And impact-driven academic research in Machine Learning, rather than sheer volume, created social and financial value I felt proud to talk about. Quality over quantity has been my guiding motto, reshaping my path from a small city to a global stage in tech. For me, it’s about depth to some substantial “meaty” degree, while also handling the right amount of breadth that a successful Product Leader inevitably has to juggle. And as I build, this is the standard I hold—driving impact through “meat” aka substance that has a lasting long-term viability, not just scale for the short-term of today. I’m learning everyday, and do see founders who focus on scaling for how the world looks like today (not necessarily focusing on how it would look like in 2027 or so with AGI) succeed a lot in the market, so God knows where this learning journey would take me on this point of view, but for now, I’m proud to have the right logical reasoning to stick with what I’ve learnt till now. A Reflection on My Roots and Gratitude for the Digital Age I hail from a small, remote village in Uttarakhand, where the challenges of daily life are many and the conveniences that most take for granted remain distant dreams. Until today, my village lacks proper roads, meaning that one must walk at least 1-2 kilometers to reach my home. Online deliveries, as many are familiar with in urban areas, are simply not possible here. With limited access to the internet and frequent power shortages, even the notion of drone pizza deliveries feels like a far-fetched idea. The region has seen multiple changes in government leadership over the years, yet the fundamental issues remain unchanged. This has resulted in heavy migration over the past decade, and today, it is rare to find any youth in the village. Many only return once a year to visit their ancestral homes, while others prefer to spend their vacations abroad, sharing their experiences with a few hashtags. There is little in terms of entertainment beyond the celebration of Hindu festivals, and a lack of proper water supply severely affects agricultural activities. The terrain is mountainous, making it nearly impossible to use machinery, and the only means of sustenance often involves hard, manual labor. However, as I prepare to return to the city, I am struck by a remarkable change. There is now a light emerging from the hills—figuratively and literally—in the form of internet connectivity. The very same digital platforms that have become central to our lives, particularly short-form video content, are now bringing visibility to regions like mine. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the early members of the YouTube team, whose work has made this transformation possible. I don’t think they fully realized the potential this platform would have for creating employment opportunities in content creation, particularly for people in rural areas. Today, thanks to these digital tools, we can reach thousands of people, many of whom can relate to the struggles and beauty of life in the hills. Despite the hardships, the smiles and joy that come from sharing our stories are both uplifting and inspiring. These moments, though small, have the power to brighten people's days. It is heartening to see that, as a result, more people are returning to the hills—not just to visit, but to stay, to reconnect, and to participate in the rich cultural traditions that define our festivals. There is a growing sense of community and pride in our heritage. It is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, happiness and resilience can thrive, and that technology, when harnessed correctly, can be a powerful tool for positive change. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities that these digital advancements have brought to my village and to many like it. The future feels brighter, and I look forward to seeing even more positive transformations in the years to come.

Despite his immense popularity, we learned about the inspiring and emotional journey behind his success. Love Babbar's father ran a dhaba near our university to support his son's education. Seeing them share the university's biggest stage as guest speakers was a truly touching moment. Here are three key learnings from Love Babbar's journey that resonated with me: 1. The shift wasn’t just about relocating—it was about recalibrating myself to thrive in a different rhythm. Change is always needed for growth. Without change, there’s no space for new experiences, skills, or perspectives. Yet, adapting to change isn’t always easy. It requires a growth mindset—the willingness to learn, to embrace challenges, and to accept that discomfort is often a sign of growth in progress. As the sole developer working to bring Project Brahma to life, I had to learn and adapt new skills constantly. Building something from the ground up with limited resources required not only technical skills but also resilience, patience, and the ability to pivot as needed. This journey taught me that change often brings unexpected opportunities for growth, as long as we’re willing to step outside our comfort zones. Now, in my role at Vatsin Technology Solutions Pvt. It was a typical bustling evening in Jaipur, where the streets buzzed with energy and anticipation. Arya and I were there for a hackathon, serving as judges. However, the same couldn't be said for UP and Bihar. There was a glaring void – no offline meetups, no conferences, and a significant lack of awareness about the latest technological advancements like cloud computing and artificial intelligence. This gap troubled us deeply. That night, back in our hotel room, the idea took root. With laptops in hand and determination in our hearts, Arya and I decided to take a bold step. We opened an issue, the first step towards creating a community that would bridge this gap. Thus, CNCG Bihar was born.
