We deliver results—today and tomorrow. For a tree crop like coffee, it takes time for new innovations to be widely adopted by farmers. That's why our program areas are tailored to deliver short, medium, and long-term results: ✅ Breeding—varieties to farmers starting in 2036 ✅ Trials—higher quality plants to farmers today ✅ Nursery—higher quality plants to farmers today, paving the path for the varieties of tomorrow ✅ Global leadership—advocacy for agricultural innovation forever Learn about our programs: https://lnkd.in/et_XJQX6

Grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihoods of the families who produce it.
About us
World Coffee Research (WCR) is a 501 (c)(5) non-profit, collaborative research and development program of the global coffee industry to grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihood of the families who produce it. WCR works to create a toolbox of coffee varieties, genetic resources and accompanying technologies and to disseminate them strategically and collaboratively in producing countries to alleviate constraints to the supply chain of high quality coffee. We have research trials and projects underway in 30+ countries, all of which are designed to deliver higher quality coffee, more productive coffee farms, and more sustainable livelihoods for coffee farmers. Most of our research is conducted in the places where coffee is grown. We conduct our work in partnership with leading research institutes, governmental bodies, and coffee organizations from around the world, including the Specialty Coffee Associations of America and Europe (SCAA/SCAE), the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD), Texas A&M University and the Borlag Institute, and among others. To ensure maximum on-the-ground impact, we also partner closely with local research institutions, coffee organizations, governments, NGOs, and the private sector. WCR's American headquarters is in Portland, OR with satellite offices in Marseille, France, and Santa Ana, El Salvador, where we also operate a research farm. WCR is funded through direct contributions from coffee industry stakeholders. Additional funding also comes from foundations, development organizations, and scientific research granting agencies. ✨ 2024 was a fantastic year for Lincoln & York! ✨ In case you missed it, this year we celebrated 30 years in the coffee indsutry, which is a milestone we celebrated all year long, culminating in a fantastic staff party with our wonderful team! Beyond our 30th anniversary celebrations, we had an eventful year full of coffee-related adventures. Highlights included origin trips to Peru and Colombia, and attending major industry events like the Speciality Coffee Associations World of Coffee in Copenhagen, The London Coffee Festival and the European Coffee Symposium and COHO expo in Berlin. We also visited World Coffee Research to learn more about how they’re future-proofing the coffee industry through climate-resilient coffee varieties. A highlight of the year was seeing progress in Burundi, where our partnership with Omwani Coffee and Migoti Coffee is funding the construction of a reservoir to provide clean water in the coffee farming community of Kinama. 👇Watch our year at a glance below. Here’s to an even more amazing 2025! #Coffee #CoffeePartner #YearInReview

I was able to go on this World Coffee Research trip to Costa Rica last month. It was an incredible experience to visit CATIE Oficial and see the work they are collaborating with WCR on to secure the future of the Coffea plant species. It was a pleasure to be learning up close alongside other WCR member company folks from across the planet who connect this future to their company missions. Our joining WCR was prompted by the research that I’ve been doing via the ZHAW Coffee Excellence Center post grad certificate in advanced studies program for the last 15 months. I completed the course final exam late last night and the feeling is bittersweet. The more that I learn about the coffee plant, the more curious that I feel about the world and the more awakened I keep feeling about life. Every morning when I pour my coffee I fall in love with the flavor, I feel warmed by the people, and in awe of existence, reminded again and again how grateful I feel for this life, our team and community, and the people we connect with in coffee from around the world.
Member Day 2024 💚☕ On November 12, members of our team—including Alexa Heinicke, Maeve Holler, Dr. Santos Barrera Lemus, Dr. Tania Humphrey, and Emilia Umaña—had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from member companies and guests around the globe to Costa Rica for our second annual Member Day. Nearly 50 participants from countries as near and far as Guatemala and Singapore gathered in an immersive, hands-on experience consisting of field visits, tours, and cupping activities—all to connect more deeply with the variety development at the heart of WCR's work. We are so thankful to all who joined us on this learning journey. We hope to welcome you to another research site and origin soon. Read the recap of this year's event here: https://lnkd.in/g3mWi2hD Special thanks to our collaborators SintercafeCR for supporting this event and to our partners at Aquiares Estate Coffee and CATIE Oficial for hosting our members.

Each year, World Coffee Research CEO Dr. Jennifer "Vern" Long writes a letter to the coffee community reflecting on the progress that the organization has achieved over the last year in collaboration with partners and member companies. "The end of 2024 marks a significant milestone in WCR’s global journey to create the next generation of varieties. This year, our arabica and robusta breeding programs, trials, and nursery and seed systems efforts have entered new phases that will usher a wave of greater stability and resilience across our sector both in 2025 and beyond," writes Long. "I see the transformational impact these efforts will have—not only on our industry—but also the social impacts delivered from stable coffee export revenues, and, most especially, the economic and environmental benefits that coffee farmers around the world will experience firsthand. This journey, on which we’ve embarked together, is absolutely the course that will get us where we need to be as a global coffee community."
