I had the good fortune and great pleasure to chat with two advisors who executed a very successful succession. Michael J. Smith and Lucas Lawson, CLU®, share their insights on how they made it work so well, in spite of some significant obstacles presented to them. Those of you that know me, know we are a hockey family. There is no greater story in the history of hockey in the United States than that told in Miracle. Most people see it as a great true story. I see this movie as an example of what strategic thinking, clear systems and the right personnel to run those systems can accomplish. Staying true to your vision, knowing the impact your systems have on your clients and customers and putting the right people doing the work they excel at will lead to outstanding results for you as well. Your vision and methods can be uniquely yours and lead you to success--you don't have to do things like everyone else.

By asking clients their reasons for saying yes, you not only reaffirm their decision but also gather valuable information that can help shape your future interactions with them. We explore the importance of leveraging past experiences with clients and prospects, particularly in understanding their motivations, their decision-making process, and their “ground rules” for communication. We also highlight how real-time feedback can improve your client relationships and overall effectiveness, not to mention, can help you to drive increased levels of advocacy. As a business owner, there is no shortage of books to help provide strategic direction, motivation and different ways to handle problems. When asked what book I go to for lessons learned in running a business, I take a different approach. One of my favorites, “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy, speaks to perseverance, loyalty and unselfishness in the face of dire circumstances. My hope is that you aren’t ever faced with the same scenarios that take place in this novel, but as a business owner, it’s important to remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing and to keep moving forward. What’s your go-to?
