Interviewing candidates is like driving. Everyone thinks they're great at it. In reality, most people are terrible. (fwiw I think I'm mediocre at both). Had a great time chatting with Amit Matani at Wellfound about how we hire here at Mesa, our non-traditional interview process, and a bunch of other fun topics. Thanks again for hosting me. We're looking for great people to join us on our mission to make homeownership more affordable and rewarding. If you're looking for the most challenging and fulfilling role of your career - please reach out. We're hiring! full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gmPzspGQ

What people think should sit on a careers page: Open roles What should actually go on a careers page: - Your culture - What it’s like to work at your company - What your day-to-day would be like, at a high level - Company values (no meeting Fridays, in-office culture, etc) - What an exceptional candidate looks like (with past examples who got hired) I swear, so many companies completely miss here. They put no effort into their careers page, and think that applicants don’t care. They do. Candidates are considering 10 other startups. Why should they work at yours?

No one wants to hear this, but if you are a startup, you need to take hiring bets that other people won’t. You won’t be able to easily pull talent from big tech companies - it’s hard to convince someone to take a 70% pay-cut (when you include liquid stock compensation), even with a compelling mission. So, don't just recruit from big tech or other name-brands. Instead, find people that: 1. Have agency and talent, but not much experience 2. Are motivated differently - loves the mission / wants more ownership / wants to be a founder in the future 3. Are located in areas that people aren't looking, especially now that everyone wants to return to the office There are exceptions, of course. And this takes more effort. But this is what we’ve seen works best for startups, especially in the early stage.
