Ensuring cost-effective transmission to support affordable state electricity policies is necessary, challenging, and possible! That's how I would summarize the bottom line of the panel discussion at the NARUC Annual Meeting this morning. The panel brought together state regulators, grid operators, and customer representatives to discuss the importance of proactive transmission planning and transmission cost controls and how they can be used to ensure a more cost-effective energy transition. The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) approved a resolution recognizing the importance of advanced #transmission technologies. "There are many polarizing issues facing our country today – but deploying smart transmission technologies to cost-effectively strengthen the nation's #grid is not among them," says ACORE's Elise Caplan. "We hope to see the federal government build on NARUC's leadership to ensure these near-term grid solutions receive the support necessary to continue their momentum." Today NARUC adopted a resolution in support of #GridEnhancingTechnologies and #HighPerformanceConductors! Federal grants that include these technologies have touched 29 states - these grants help utilities improve grid efficiency and lower costs. Doug Scott, Chair of the Illinois Commerce Commission, said: “We must adapt and innovate to serve growing electricity demand while maintaining energy affordability and reliability. What will it take to achieve a carbon-free electrical grid? One immediate solution is Advanced Power Flow Control (#APFC). One example is Smart Wires Inc., which has developed technology that can dramatically increase the efficiency of existing power lines. Their devices that help manage the flow of electricity on the grid, similar to how traffic signals manage cars. They allow power to be rerouted around congested areas on transmission lines, boosting capacity and helping the grid deliver energy more efficiently.
