Vegan Activist Alliance
Civic and Social Organizations
BIPOC led & founded, anti-speciesist, anti-colonial organization working to end the exploitation of beyond-human persons
About us
Vegan Activist Alliance was founded on the belief that all Beings have a natural right to their autonomy and to live free from oppression regardless of species. We are a community-driven, anti-speciesist, anti-colonial organization working to end the exploitation of beyond-human persons (animals). We seek to challenge power-holders and the status quo on who is deserving of freedom and autonomy and who is included in the fight for social justice. VAA strives to achieve individual and systemic change exploitative industries by movement and coalition building, raising awareness, building community, and working on policy. Our public activations are experiential. We engage with the public via video footage, conversation, literature, art, music, poetry, performances, and plant-based food. We seek to build community and empower activists to lead in the fight for liberation without depending on any particular group or brand– including us. Our goal is not only to create more activists but to build a more cohesive and inclusive movement. VAA takes an abolitionist, radically inclusive, anti-speciesist, anti-racist, anti-colonial, anti-imperialist approach to our liberation work. We believe in the interconnectedness of all Beings and the planet and hold our consistent anti-oppression views firmly. We stand in solidarity with all persons regardless of species and with all members of our community regardless of race, color, sex, age, national origin, ethnicity, citizenship status, religion or lack thereof, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, neurodiversity, physical and mental ability, and any other status as a federal, state or local protected class. Thank you for joining us in the fight for liberation and for being in community with us!

🎉 Big win for beyond-human relatives in Mexico! 🐾Thank you to the animal rights activists and organizations, Animal Equality, Fundación Igualdad Animal, Movimiento Consciencia, Humane Society International, who made this win possible! Repost from Hip Latina: Mexico just took some huge steps towards protecting animals. 🐾 On December 2nd, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum signed a set of constitutional reforms paving the way for a federal animal welfare law and enshrining animal protection as a fundamental value in the Mexican Constitution. After 17 state Congresses followed the Senate and Chamber of Deputies’ approval of the reform, animal welfare is now embedded in Mexico’s highest legal framework. #Mexico #AnimalWelfare #EndAnimalCruelty #DerechosDeAnimales #IgualdadAnimal #MovimientoConsciencia #HumaneSocietyMexico #DerechosAnimales #ViolenciaContraAnimales #ClaudiaSheinbaum #AnimalRights #AnimalLiberation #Vegan #Veganism #Decolonial #AntiColonial #Animals #AnimalLovers

🌱 As founding advisors of the Animal Policy Alliance (APA), we attended the 3rd Annual Animal Policy Alliance Summit last month. We are grateful to be part of this incredible group of organizations and thank the Humane League for convening this alliance and organizing this yearly event. At Vegan Activist Alliance, we are coalition builders. We firmly believe that collective action supports and strengthens all efforts to dismantle large-scale cruelty in the food system (and beyond!) through policy action, movement building, and grassroots organizing power. 🌱 During the summit, we presented on coalition building and its role in building solidarity across movements. We shared insights on navigating coalition spaces, particularly in predominantly white-led coalitions, and highlighted the need to avoid saviorism, tokenism, and performative land acknowledgments. We emphasized the crucial importance of supporting community-led efforts, compensating individuals fairly, and paying reparations to Indigenous communities for occupying their territories. We discussed challenges and strategies for advancing policy under the new presidential administration and highlighted the importance of grassroots organizing as the foundation for lasting change. After two days of strategizing, we left even more inspired and motivated to continue dismantling systems of oppression to protect our planet and all our relatives--human and beyond-human! 🌍 Your voice and actions are crucial in the fight for justice. For Native American Heritage Month, we honor the strength, resilience, and resistance of the Wampanoag Nation, whose history is too often erased in mainstream narratives. Today, on the National Day of Mourning, we remember the genocide of millions of Indigenous peoples, the theft of their lands, the erasure of their cultures, and the ongoing resistance on Turtle Island (North America). 📖 Tisquantum (colonized name Squanto), a member of the Patuxet tribe, was kidnapped, forced into slavery, and later helped the Pilgrims survive. In 1675, the Wampanoag, Nipmuc, and Narragansett tribes, led by Metacom, resisted land theft, forced assimilation, and broken treaties by leading raids against English settlements in what is now Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Today, the Wampanoag continue to live on their ancestral lands, preserving their culture through oral traditions, ceremonies, language, and social gatherings. Their resistance to U.S. settler colonialism remains strong as they fight for land sovereignty and justice. 🦃Rather than celebrating Thanksgiving and contributing to the deaths of 46 million turkeys and 316 million pounds of waste, we urge you to donate to Indigenous-led orgs fighting for LANDBACK, reject land acknowledgments without action or financial support, and learn from and amplify Indigenous voices. On this World Vegan Day, learn how multinational meat-processing corporations are destroying our planet. The Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland and is home to thousands of plant and beyond-human species. A recent report has exposed corporations are using toxic chemicals to deforest the Pantanal, leading to soil contamination and water pollution which are harming Indigenous communities, local communities, and beyond-human persons. The report exposed how rancher Claudecy Lemes, who supplies cattle to major multinational meat processing companies like JBS, Marfrig, and Minerva, is responsible for an estimated 86% of recent deforestation in the region. To clear land for cattle ranching, Lemes used planes to spray Agent Orange—a toxic defoliant—across an area four times the size of Amsterdam. His farm, Fazenda Soberana, is linked to the supply chains of major multinational supermarkets like Carrefour, Casino/GPA, Grupo Mateus, and Sendas/Assaí. As the climate crisis worsens, we must advocate for a just transition to a sustainable plant-sourced food system, push for LAND BACK initiatives, and center Indigenous knowledge in our climate solutions. COP 16, the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity, has begun today in Colombia, yet Colombia remains the deadliest country for Earth defenders in Abya Yala (Latin America and the Caribbean)—the deadliest region in the world for water and land protectors. Afro-descendant communities have protected biodiversity in Abya Yala for over 500 years. In Colombia’s Pacific region, they have long protected some of the planet’s most biodiverse ecosystems, home to 10% of the world’s plant and beyond-human species. Despite this, only 5% of their territories are legally recognized, leaving these communities vulnerable to illegal logging, mining, and deadly violence. Afro-descendant communities face daily threats from armed groups, megaprojects, and multinational corporations. At this year’s United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, they’re demanding global recognition—not just in words, but in action—to protect their right to defend the lands they steward and their lives. We must protect the lives and sovereignty of Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and local communities. It is crucial for collective liberation and to heal the triple planetary crisis. 🌿✊🏽 TAKE ACTION: 1. Read the Declaration on Securing Afro-descendant Peoples’ Land Tenure Rights in Latin America and the Caribbean: An Effective Pathway to Conservation and Climate Change Action. (Link in bio). 2. In 1492, Christopher Columbus began a brutal legacy of violence, exploitation, and erasure in the Caribbean—one that Indigenous peoples like the Arawak Taíno, Carib, Lucayan, Ciguayo, Guanahatabey, and Kalinago have resisted for centuries. Despite facing torture, enslavement, and genocide, their deep connections to the land, sea, and beyond-human relatives endured. Their sustainable practices, such as conuco farming, and reverence for all Beings, exemplify their harmonious relationship with Mother Earth. Today, the myth of Indigenous extinction is being disproven, as Arawak Taíno descendants are alive and actively resisting the impacts of colonization. However, the erasure of Caribbean Indigenous peoples in history and by colonial governments continues to deny their rights and existence. This Indigenous People’s Day, take action: - Donate your time and resources to Indigenous organizations fighting for Land Back, such as the UNITED CONFEDERATION OF TAINO PEOPLE INC, Borikua Taino Foundation, and Taino Studies (@TainoStudies). -Learn about Arawak Taíno culture by following Reencuentro Taíno Conference (@tainoconference) and The Caribbean Indigenous Legacies Project (CILP) from the Smithsonian. -Divest from industries built on colonial violence, such as fossil fuels and agribusiness. -Go beyond land acknowledgments—support the return of land to its rightful stewards. Decolonization means justice, restoration, and the end of Indigenous erasure in the Caribbean. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #Decolonize #IndigenousResistance #LandBack #Taino #Arawak #LANDBACK #ClimateJustice #ClimateJustice #AnimalRights #AnimalLiberation #ClimateJustice #Vegan #Veganism #Justice #CollectiveLiberation #FoodJustice #FoodAccess #EnvironmentalJustice #Activism #SocialJustice #Biodiversity #Decolonization #PlantBased #AntiColonial #AfroIndigenous #IndigenousSovereignty #Colonialism #Sustainability #Resistance

Original caption and post from Water Protector Legal Collective: Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, it’s important to reflect on the ongoing impact of residential schools on Indigenous communities. Since June 2021, September 30th is recognized as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal holiday allowing public service employees to participate in this vital day. This day also coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which raises awareness about the intergenerational impacts of Indian Residential Schools and promotes the concept of Every Child Matters. As we reflect on this painful history, we stand together in solidarity, acknowledging the profound suffering endured by our ancestors, families, and communities. We honor the resilience of survivors and the importance of their stories in our collective journey toward healing and justice. We remember and pray for our children—now ancestors—who never made it home. May their spirits find peace, and may their memories guide us as we work to heal the wounds of the past. Our communities have always drawn strength from our connections to each other, our lands, the water, and our traditions. Together, let us commit to creating a future where our children can thrive, free from the shadows of the past.
