Getting rid of all friction in your product's onboarding journey is a BAD thing. If your real goals are: - Free-to-paid conversions - Feature engagement - Long-term retention Then “frictionless” won't get you there. How do you expect new users to: 1. Sign up 2. Figure out how to use your product 3. Actually solve a problem they’re facing ...if you’re not creating a clear path for them? And, please, don’t blame “friction” as the reason users drop off. Friction is just a part of life – from making a coffee to doing your job. The real issue isn’t the friction. It’s the lack of a clear, outcome-focused journey. Your users don’t leave because they got stuck for a minute. They leave because, from the start, your onboarding didn’t make them feel like they were getting what they came for. At each stage, you need to create a clear picture of what users will get: - Focus on what they’re trying to achieve. - Make the steps to get there obvious. - Provide simple, direct instructions. If users can see the end result, they’ll gladly work through what’s needed to get there. Friction isn’t the reason for user drop-off – it’s the fact that they don’t see what’s in it for them.
