“I love what I do because of the sheer difficulty of the research we do in the lab. I and my group fail 19 times out of 20, but we race into the lab each day because of that 1 in 20 times when we succeed. There's nothing like it in the world.” — Kevin Janes, PhD, the John Marshall Money Professor of Biomedical Engineering

Nurses know the sky's the limit. From software consulting to science, quality improvement to design, nurses have skills that enable them to do and be A LOT. In a moment when #nurse and #nursingfaculty shortages are acute, my colleagues and I are working hard to create NEW kinds of nursing roles (including QI-focused #ClinicalNurseLeaders and nurses with dual roles who both teach nursing students AND care for patients) that offer agency, voice, leadership, and mentorship - and a new way to think about what it means to be a nurse. I have an incredible team in this work: UVA Health's Kathy Baker, Mary Coffey, Karin Skeen, Continuing Education director Kathryn Reid, and many others - and am immensely proud of the growing number of nurses who are adding "teacher" to their titles, paying it forward to the next generation of nurses. I recently sat down with Radio IQ/WVTF Public Radio to tell some of that story. It is with profound sadness that we share the unexpected death of Dr. Mark Edwin Shaffrey, chair of the UVA School of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery and David D. Weaver Professor of Neurosurgery. His legacy is marked by professional excellence, unwavering dedication, and servant leadership. A beloved leader and a brilliant neurosurgeon, Dr. Shaffrey was tirelessly dedicated to his patients and an enduring and kindhearted friend to so many across the greater UVA health system. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Shaffrey’s family, friends, and colleagues in the Department of Neurosurgery and across UVA Grounds during this difficult time.

Most of us probably take our senses of smell and taste for granted… until we don’t have it anymore. But Steven Munger, MD, professor of otolaryngology, knows how critical these senses are for identifying dangers like smoke or spoiled food, enhancing the palatability of the things we eat and drink, and even for relating to one another. #ResearchInMotion

I can't express how humbled I am of how our community at UVA Health comes together for Socktober every year. It's a honor to be amongst such AMAZING people. Thank you to everyone who contributed this year, and to all of our caregivers who make a difference in the lives of so many each and every day.
This #GivingTuesday, we’re celebrating the power of giving back! ❤️ Through our annual "Socktober" initiative, Compass One Healthcare—powered by Morrison Healthcare, Crothall Healthcare, CCL Hospitality Group, and TouchPoint Support Services—has donated over 200,000 socks this year to shelters and charities nationwide. 🧦 With sites like UVA Health System donating 22,000 socks and UK HealthCare nearly 10,000 socks, our four-year total has reached an incredible 760,000 socks donated.
