Big shouts out to our own Katie Crowder who received teaching grants for two really cool projects: --1) a grant to create a fully Honors section of "LING 2050: Language of Now." This section of LON will be offered in Fall 2025, and it will be the first class in Linguistics to have a completely Honors enrollment. & --2) a grant and acceptance to the Generative AI Institute for Teaching cohort for Spring '25. Great work, Katie! Making us proud!

A recent study by Dr. Saleh Aljalahmah ’17 and Dr. Oksana L. Zavalina sheds light on how students in Kuwait are learning to create metadata for Arabic-language eBooks. Researchers analyzed 187 Dublin Core metadata records crafted by undergraduate library science students, comparing individual vs. group projects across female-only and male-only classes over four semesters. The findings? -Strengths: Students demonstrated solid skills in many areas of metadata creation. -Challenges: Common struggles included representing copyright, intellectual rights, and source information, as well as describing contributors and time/place context. Key Insights: Group work often produced more accurate and complete records than individual efforts, with interesting differences between female-only and male-only class sections. These results pave the way for curriculum improvements and future research to enhance metadata education in the region.
