Official account of the United Nations. For peace, dignity & equality on a healthy planet.
About us
Founded at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations is an international organization made up of 193 Member States committed to maintaining international peace and security. Every day the UN works to tackle global challenges and deliver results for those most in need. Giving life-saving support to populations hit by humanitarian crises, helping build and keep the peace in conflict-ridden areas, supporting governments and their citizens to advance development and fight poverty, and promoting human rights worldwide are the core pillars of the work of the United Nations and the mandates it receives from its Member States. The Charter of the United Nations is available in full at: http://www.un.org/en/documents/charter/

Artificial Intelligence without human oversight would leave the world blind – and perhaps nowhere more perilously and recklessly than in global peace and security. AI’s expansion into security systems raises fundamental concerns about human rights, dignity, and the rule of law. Critically, AI is eroding the fundamental principle of human control over the use of force. From intelligence-based assessments to target selection, algorithms have reportedly already been used in making life-and-death decisions. The integration of AI with nuclear weapons is particularly alarming with potentially disastrous consequences. We must avoid it at all costs. No country should design, develop, deploy or use military applications of AI in armed conflict that violate international law, humanitarian law and human rights. I urge members of the Security Council to lead by example and ensure that competition over emerging technologies does not destabilize international peace and security.

“I stand before you today as a proud descendent of enslaved people who resisted slavery and racism.” This past year, Yolanda Renee King, an activist & granddaughter of Martin Luther King Jr., joined us at UN Headquarters in New York for a special event to commemorate Remember Slavery Day. The young leader urged everyone, everywhere, to take action to #FightRacism and all forms of discrimination.
