This morning I had the chance to represent UNICEF USA and our incredible partnership with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the launch of the McKinney Texas #LightTheWorld giving machines. Through the Giving Machines people have the opportunity to make an impact at whichever level feels comfortable for them, in turn enabling UNICEF to have the resources to procure vital supplies for children so that they can survive and thrive, no matter the circumstances they were born into. Such an inspiring start to the holiday week!

We started the year with a celebratory event in January, sharing the significant success toward polio eradication made possible by the generosity of Rotary International and more than 1.2M Rotarians globally, and we ended the year with our annual partnership meeting this week between UNICEF USA, UNICEF, World Health Organization and Rotary International as we reaffirmed our commitment and look to the year ahead. Eradicating polio will not only save children’s lives but save ~$33B this century that can address other health risks. We are laser focused on finishing the job.

Congress must act urgently to pass a #ContinuingResolution to avert a government shutdown and lapse in funds that are critical to supporting the health and wellbeing of children in the U.S. and around the world. We urge lawmakers to come together and find a solution now, and to continue to prioritize the needs of children and families.

Our brains are wired to focus on the negative. This “negativity bias” might have helped our ancestors survive, but in today’s world, it can drown out the hope and progress happening all around us—especially for children. From a historic drop in child mortality rates to the groundbreaking rollout of malaria vaccines, there is so much good happening for children globally. As we step into the New Year, I’m committing to rewiring my focus—to continuing to work with my teams at UNICEF USA to relentlessly pursue a more equitable world for every child, yes, and also to more frequently recognize and share the stories of hope, resilience and change that are shaping brighter futures for children everywhere. Here’s my latest article on breaking the negativity bias and why it matters for children’s futures.

Adolescent girls are acutely affected by conflict and crises around the world, yet the unique challenges they face are often overlooked. That's why we're teaming up with the Girls Opportunity Alliance to support girls in critical need. Support from the Alliance will help UNICEF reach girls in Haiti and Sudan to provide access to core health, nutrition, and education services and to provide care packages with essential provisions. Behind every statistic is a story. A child displaced by conflict. A family searching for safety after a natural disaster. A community struggling with hunger. We believe that no child should have to leave their home to survive. That’s why UNICEF and partners are addressing the root causes of migration while providing vital support to children and families on the move. Learn more at the link in our comment below.

There are more children on the move than ever before, forced from their homes due to conflict, climate change and other harrowing circumstances. In addition to supporting children and families on the move, UNICEF and partners are working around the globe to address the root causes of migration. Visit the link in our comment below to learn how you can support UNICEF’s work to ensure every child, everywhere, is healthy, educated, protected and respected — no matter where they live.
