🌞 BGL Summer Reading Series: Dean's Pick 🎶 As the summer holidays approach, we’re sharing top reading recommendations from the BGL team to inspire your relaxation and reflection time. First up is a suggestion from our Executive Dean, Uwe Dulleck, who brings a unique perspective from the world of music and creativity. Uwe’s Summer Reading Recommendation 📖 “Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music” by Ferruccio Busoni (1907/1916) Here’s why Uwe thinks you should dive into this classic: "If you want to read a little bit on music, Busoni’s 1907/1916 is a start for the academic and it’s one of several books on music I read in 2024. I enjoy observations of the process of creativity and discovery, and what makes such a work “good”. Sometimes these remind me of the struggles academics go through. We often only see great outcomes (like Beethoven’s symphonies) and miss not only the work that went into it, but also the struggle (similar to the life of an academic?) the creators went through to make ends meet." 👀 For those curious, you can read an English translation of the essay here: https://lnkd.in/ghEhp-Hc

📣 BGL's Professor Kim Rubenstein will be working with Associate Professors Ramona Vijeyarasa and Jacqueline Mowbray, led through UTS Law, on their recently awarded Australian Research Council Discovery Project: Auditing the Auditors. This collaboration highlights the strength of universities working together to share expertise for the betterment of society. This important project will assess the effectiveness of parliamentary auditing in understanding the impact of bills and legislation on women's lives. It was influenced by the Gender & Equality Audit Committee established in Tasmania in 2022 under the leadership of Ruth Forrest and will compare auditing practices across Australia (Tasmania & the ACT), Canada, and Spain. The project aims to: 🔍 Investigate the role of gender audit committees in advancing gender equality through legislative scrutiny 🌍 Generate comparative insights on the influence and relevance of gender auditing in law-making 📊 Create a qualitative and quantitative dataset on gender audits This timely research will not only provide critical data on how auditing can improve legislation for women, but also offer insights that could help the Australian Government achieve its gender equality ambitions by learning from both local and global experiences. Congratulations to Kim and the team on this significant achievement! 👏 We look forward to seeing the positive impact this research will have in shaping more inclusive and effective legislation. #DP25 #ARCDiscovery #BGLResearch #UCResearch #UCBGL 📷: Michael Silver

Last week, Prof. Rebekah Russell-Bennett was awarded the HDR Top Supervisor Award by the Australian Business Deans Council—the pinnacle of achievement for higher degree research supervisors! 🎓🏆 This prestigious award was supported by over 20 colleagues, students, and industry partners who highlighted Rebekah’s: 🔹 Transformational Mentorship: Goes beyond research—offering emotional support, career advice, and life-changing guidance. 📚💙 🔹 Industry Collaboration: Building strong partnerships that create opportunities for research students such as with Essential Energy and an ARC Industry Transformation Training Centre, driving impactful, practical research. 🤝🔍 🔹 A Network of Engaged Scholars: Creating a legacy through research students who have published 911 articles and supervise their own students (academic grandchildren) 👩🏫📝 🔹 Global Impact: Creating international opportunities and cross-cultural experiences for students, opening doors around the world. 🌍✈️ 🔹 Inclusive & Personalised Supervision: Tailoring her mentorship to each student’s unique needs, advocating for opportunities, and breaking barriers to success. 🧑🎓📢 With over 49 successful research student completions, Rebekah’s track record speaks for itself—most supervisors complete fewer than 10 in a career! 🎯 Many of her academic children are now leaders in academia and industry 💼. As Rebekah says, “Working with HDR students is the best part of my job, so to be recognised for that really speaks to my intrinsic motivation for why I do what I do.” This award reflects the faculty’s mission of ‘Working with government and for society’ through research student topics that matter and developing future scholars who can make social impact. 📖 Read more about this incredible achievement: https://bit.ly/4ictsPP #HDR #PhDSupervision #HigherEd #InclusiveSupervision #ResearchExcellence #UCBGL #UniCBR 🔬 Canberra Business School ABDC Communications, Leslie Falkiner-Rose
