A huge relief at Twenty20 as Apple has cancelled its plan to sabotage Web Apps in the EU. This comes after huge backlash from supporters and developers, ending weeks of uncertainty. Twenty20’s clients, like many other businesses, rely on the push notifications model. The series of decisions made by Apple would have crippled the ability for anyone to compete on their platform outside of their App Store.

Apple’s decision to discontinue iPhone web apps in the EU could soon face investigation. Twenty20’s clients, like many other businesses, rely on the push notifications model. The series of decisions made by Apple will cripple the ability for anyone to compete on their platform outside of their App Store. Apple argues that web apps are built “directly on WebKit”, allowing web apps to “align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS.” With the change to iOS 17.4, websites added to the homescreen now act only as bookmarks that open a new tab in your browser, rather than standalone services capable of doing things like sending notifications and showing badges, a feature Apple just added to web apps last year. App developers are pushing back on the discontinuation of web apps. Open Web Advocacy, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the open web, is conducting a survey to see how the change will impact developers. It plans on sending the responses to the European Commission.
