Congratulations to Monishaa Suresh whose paper "Rivers, Rights, and Religion: Securing Legal Personhood for the Ganges River in India" will be published in the upcoming TJICL Volume 33.1!
Assistant Dean for Environmental Law Studies; Professorial Lecturer in Law, The George Washington University Law School
I am very pleased to report that Monishaa Suresh's paper, "Rivers, Rights, and Religion: Securing Legal Personhood for the Ganges River in India," has been accepted for publication in Volume 33:1 of the Tulane Journal of International and Comparative Law (forthcoming fall 2024). Monishaa prepared this paper in my Human Rights and Environmental Protection course at The George Washington University Law School in Spring 2023. She is the 10th student in this talented class to have her paper accepted for publication. Monishaa's paper discusses the religious, environmental, and commercial significance of the Ganges and examines case studies of legal personhood for rivers in New Zealand and Colombia. The paper proposes granting legal personhood to the Ganges River at the national level and offers recommendations to determine: (1) who will be responsible as guardians of the river, (2) how the river’s new rights will be enforced, and (3) how granting legal personhood status will ultimately result in positive change. Monishaa is currently employed as a law clerk in Washington, D.C. Superior Court. She graduated from GW Law in 2023 with a Concentration in Intellectual Property and served as the Notes Editor for the GW Journal of Energy and Environmental Law. Congratulations, Monishaa!
