Here's a recent success: A student struggling with reading lacked basic blended sounds and was too hard on herself for mistakes. We practiced one sound at a time. Then added a fun race—jumping up, running to the door, and back. The result? She caught up in reading within 6 months and gained confidence. Learning should be fun, and movement makes it easier. Many of us have memories of being told to sit still. At home..at restaurant... or at church.. or at school. It's hard to sit completely still when we are designed to be movers and shakers. The most creative successful people I know don't sit still. So, let's embrace movement while learning! Learning should be fun and movement is part of that fun. Here are 5 ways our kids can include movement during homework time and online learning: 1. Take a break with 5 jumping jacks 2. Use a stress ball in your lap 3. Place Velcro under your desk and pull when needing some movement. 4. After completing a page of work, run to parent and give a high-five. 5. Play instrumental music and bop to the beat. Fidgets, sensory toys, calming kits, oh my! So many options. Which one to use? Each child is different and whichever you chose should allow our body to feel relaxed why keeping our brain on task. If we are distracted by it, it's a play toy and not helping with academics. Most of use work well with a fidget of some sort (ex. taping your pen). Here's an inspiring story from my experience: 📚 A Real Success Story! 📚 I worked with a 3rd grader who struggled with writing paragraphs with complete, complex sentences. They often had misspellings, run-on sentences, or incorrect punctuation. Despite our efforts for a month, he was still struggling and feeling discouraged. So, we decided to set goals together! I told him the expectation was to master this skill in one month and let him plan how to progress each week. Here’s what he came up with: Write 1 sentence with a conjunction and adjective – he picked the topic. Write 2 sentences with a conjunction and adjective – he picked the topic. Write 3 sentences with a conjunction and adjective – he picked the topic. Write 3 sentences with a conjunction and adjective – I picked the topic. Write 4 sentences with a conjunction and adjective – he picked the topic. Write 4 sentences with a conjunction and adjective – I picked the topic. While it wasn’t much different from what we had been doing, this time it was different because he was part of the planning. And guess what?!
