Great Morale Won't Make Itself

About us

Transforming a culture to a great place to work and produce results requires imprinting a new and different way of thinking about people; the environment within which they work, and embedding that thinking in the organizational culture. Coaching different thinking to transform cultures is the cornerstone of what The Russell Consulting Group does. And we do it well because of five fundamental beliefs upon which the consulting practice is built. 1) People are more powerful than they give themselves credit for. In any interaction allow for self-discovery over providing an answer. 2) People are accountable and want to give their very best. Coach for solutions over focusing on problems. 3) Every person in an organization, whether a leader or individual contributor, is a leader. Leading can be assumed by anyone in the job they were hired to do. It is not based on privilege, position, or education. 4) Leadership is a state of mind. Not a set of behaviors to learn and master or a position to exercise the EGO's power. 5) “Teaching a man to fish over giving them the fish” is the best approach to keeping the energy of the culture alive. Embed the knowledge and technology in the organization over enabling their reliance on external resources. The Russell Consulting Group is a management consulting firm dedicated to creating cultures that are great places to work (where the word stress is rarely or ever used) and produce results. A culture where leaders lead neutrally:non-reactively and non-judgmentally AND employees are empowered to partner and influence organizational results.

  • I 💖 being part of this Win at Work movement. It feels good to come together for the purpose of truly understanding what it takes to create environments where we are inspired, creative, purposeful and free.  That said, I want to share 2 things that might be helpful for you to read to keep you focused and in your power. 1. The recent blog I wrote about why me feeling ‘included’’ had little to do with DEI. 2. My perspective on ‘belonging’ in response to an email I received after the last newsletter.  #leadership #dei #managementdevelopment

  • Yes, things are definitely changing! Although I prefer to say “meeting people with neutrality” instead of “getting along with people.” Getting along with people doesn’t necessarily result in strong leadership, because of our tendency to adjust our behaviour to be liked, heard, seen etc. That dilutes our power. In the long run, leaders who can meet differences with neutrality instead of a right/wrong attitude are stronger because they have the ability to tap into an individual’s capacity to perform. #PersonalDevelopment #PublicHealth #GrowthMindset

  • Lingering upsets are the worst. You know, when you’re reminded of that thing that happened at the office (last week, last month or last year) and every time you think of it you get upset all over again? If you recognize this cycle happening and you’re ready to let go of it, you should know this important truth. An upset is never the result of anything external to you. Upsets are internally derived and caused by one of these 4 reasons. Judgment (they should…) Unkept promise to self (I said I would…) Withheld communication ( I wish I would have…) Unmet Expectations ( I would expect them to…) If you can identify the real reason you’re upset and realize it has more to do with your own inner thought processes and not something or someone out there, you can regain your power, find aligned action and reach a peaceful resolution without needing someone else’s input to end the cycle. #LeadershipDevelopment #SelfImprovement #PublicHealth #communication

  • One of my team members, Mariska, recently shared a story with me during her accountability assessment evaluation; “Apparently, I have a very unorthodox way of finding solutions to problems”, she told me. “Whenever I used to try and explain my way of doing things to my boss, partner, or others, I’d usually get responses like; That’s not the correct way. That’s stupid, or you need to listen to those who have training for this. Etc. It didn’t matter that I could prove my idea would have the same or even better results than theirs, I would still get dismissed as being “wrong”. It made me feel inadequate, like my way of thinking didn’t have value. So, in order to be taken seriously, I began to adjust my way of thinking to theirs and/or I’d choose not to share my thoughts at all. The more it happened, the more angry, not seen, and under appreciated, I felt. She went on to say that after some time passed, she became very ill, experiencing severe physical tension in her body and heart problems. She became so tired that it was hard to function. One day however, she had a crazy eye opening experience that showed her there was a direct correlation between her approval seeking behavior and her poor health! “The new awareness prompted me to change my thinking and behavior, she said. Step by step I started sharing and owning my thought process regardless of what others might think. I stopped believing my way was “bad” and instead viewed it as different. The more I embraced and accepted my differences, the more empowered I felt and the more my health improved.” Hearing Mariska’s story and seeing this graphic above, reminded me that “approval seeking” can be so woven into cultures, that often people don’t even realize they are doing it. I love hearing stories where people break free from those (sometimes unconscious) patterns and take their power back. Did you recognize any of the approval seeking behaviors on the graphic? • 𝟯 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 you may be relinquishing your leadership power unknowingly. 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀- Finger pointing places the power for achieving results out there, in someone else's court. Taking 100% accountability (without blame, fault, or guilt) allows you to redirect efforts and resources to achieve the desired outcome without wasting time or energy disempowered and unaccountable. 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗲𝘁𝗰. 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻- Making someone else’s approval more important than following your own internal compass, drains your personal power fast. Trusting yourself enough to take a risk is an elixir of power. 𝗚𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼-𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁- A lack of 100% attention to what’s in front of you dilutes your power of choice. When you’re not really paying attention, you unconsciously let systems, rules, or habits choose for you. This is a one way ticket to victimhood, boredom or dissatisfaction. Empowered choices require presence. #MedicalInnovation #GrowthMindset #ProfessionalDevelopment
