On November 5, 2024, the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) approved the VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) package, marking a significant advancement in EU VAT modernisation. The reforms introduce new requirements across three key areas: e-invoicing, single VAT registration, and VAT obligations for the platform economy. The most recent data from HMRC puts the UK's 'VAT Gap' at £8.8bn. That would go a long way toward reducing the Budget black hole UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves has to plug. Other countries, including France and Germany, are introducing mandatory e-invoicing to recoup missing VAT revenues, and the results have been impressive. Now UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has tasked HMRC with investigating similar measures for the UK. Findings are due in spring 2025.
