The NDIS Self Manager Hub reposted this
Proud to have co-founded and now co-chair for this fabulous organisation. It's a pleasure working with these passionate, committed and experienced colleagues to help bring The NDIS Self Manager Hub to the next stage in it's development and growth, supporting self managers to live full, good lives and to make the most of the National Disability Insurance Agency, - working to advocate that the principles of self direction are upheld in these troubling times. Thanks to Linda Hughes for her work as immediate past president (and co-founder) and to my other fabulous committed board members Nick Avery Dr George Taleporos (GAICD, PhD) Jarrod Sandell-Hay Anita Gover and Meredith Coote

On Friday, we held the Self Manager Hub AGM, and a new board was elected. The same friendly faces, with a few changes. Nick Avery and Sam Paior JP, MAICD were elected Co-chairs. Jarrod Sandell-Hay remains as deputy. Meredith Coote has been appointed Secretary. Anita Gover will be the Treasurer for another year. After many years in executive positions, Dr George Taleporos (GAICD, PhD) and Linda Hughes have been elected directors. Through the leadership of Linda Hughes and the organisation's hard work, the Self Manager Hub had its most productive and successful year yet. All of us are eager to get on with the work in this changing and at sometimes challenging space for self managers and the NDIS!

On Saturday, Peter Gregory and Dr George Taleporos (GAICD, PhD) lead an incredible workshop on self-direction! and It was so nice to have so many community members there. As promised, here is the recording. The first half of the recording is not exactly the same as I forgot to press record (oops! Sorry!), but George and Peter were troopers and stuck around to re-record it. The second half is the live Q and A with everyone. To access the recording, you will need to be a subscriber. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/gzF5Dn3G Sam Paior JP, MAICD Meredith Coote Nick Avery Jarrod Sandell-Hay Anita Gover Linda Hughes

Self Manager Hub Workshop Saturday 23rd November - The Future is Self-Direction: What might the new NDIS Registration category mean for you? The NDIS Provider and Worker Registration Taskforce has recommended establishing a new registration category called "Self-Directed Supports". This category is designed for NDIS participants and nominees who directly manage their own supports. Key aspects of this recommendation include: * Registration Requirement: Participants who self-direct their supports would need to register under this new category. * Provider Flexibility: Registered individuals in this category would not be limited to using only registered providers, except in cases involving group homes or supports classified under the Advanced Registration category, such as behavior support and restrictive practices. * Regular Check-ins: These participants would have periodic check-ins with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to ensure compliance and support. * Review and Auditing: The self-directed support arrangements would be subject to review and auditing processes to maintain quality and safety standards. * Capacity Building: The Australian Government is encouraged to invest in peer support and capacitybuilding programs to assist participants engaging in self-directed supports. In this workshop, we will: 1. Outline the self-direction registration category that was recommended by the NDIS Provider and Worker Registration Taskforce 2. Explore some basic principles that our community would like to see included in this registration category 3. Discuss the next steps we need to take to ensure that the self-direction registration category becomes a reality Guest Speaker: Peter Gregory is a passionate advocate for social justice and inclusion with a commitment to closing institutions and promoting individual rights. Driven by the belief that all people, regardless of their support needs, deserve opportunities for self-determination and social participation. Peter has pursued a lifelong passion for exploring and designing personalised support systems. His work challenges systems that deny disabled Australians their rights, aligning with the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). This event is free but to support our work please subscribe to selfmanagerhub.org.au - a website full of helpful resources for self-managing. You can claim your subscription back on your NDIS plan out of your core budget. Find out more and register below: https://lnkd.in/gwdWCr3U

The NDIS Self Manager Hub reposted this
🚨 Big and Important #NDIS Changes Announced 🚨 Today, Minister for the NDIS, Bill Shorten, announced changes aimed at increasing protections for NDIS participants and improving the quality and safety of their supports. Here’s what’s changing: ⚖️ Huge Penalty Increases Penalties for providers will jump from $400,000 to over $15 million when an NDIS participant is harmed. This brings penalties in line with those for workplace injuries under WHS laws. 👩⚖️ Criminal Prosecutions for the First Time The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission will now have the power to refer providers for criminal prosecution if they seriously fail to meet registration conditions. 🛡️ Stronger Regulatory Requirements The proposed legislation will impose stricter regulatory requirements, criminal offences, and tougher penalties for those doing the wrong thing. 🔍 Improved Monitoring & Compliance Enhanced information-gathering powers will help the Commission ensure better compliance across the NDIS sector. 🚫 Expanded Banning Orders Banning orders will now cover not only providers but also people involved in auditing and consulting within the NDIS. These reforms are based on recommendations from the Independent NDIS Review and the Disability Royal Commission, ensuring stronger safeguards for participants and a better, more transparent NDIS. 📣 Consultation on these changes will begin immediately, with broader engagement in November 2024. Stakeholders, participants, and advocates will all be involved in shaping this next chapter for the NDIS. 💬 Minister Shorten emphasised that these changes will help protect participants, stop dishonest providers, and ensure higher quality, sustainable NDIS supports. Our friends at South West Autism Network Inc (SWAN) have written a well worded article about today’s changes to the NDIS
