The European Union has just adopted the Artificial Intelligence Act, with a vote of 523-46, which will set in place a series of provisions aimed at ensuring the safe use of AI on the continent. The impact and reach of this act will be extensive, and will govern the way AI is trained, implemented, and used across the 27 EU member states. It will also inform future legislation in the US and elsewhere. Organizations who are building AI solutions trained or deployed in the EU will be bound by the rules that have just been adopted into law, which add in additional steps and parameters into assessing and complying with the risk categories. Most of the provisions will take effect in 2026, with a staggered implementation ranging from six to thirty-six months, rolled out per the risk category defined by the EU.
