"I think a lot of people might look at someone homeless and think that they're not trying to do anything to change their situation. I've seen people homeless, but they still had jobs. I've seen people living in their cars and just pretty much doing whatever they could to survive, but they only lacked that one thing, which was a home. I've been homeless with a job before. I've been homeless with a car, and people look at you different when you don't have somewhere to live." - Detroit resident Jahnisa Briggs, who experienced homelessness in 2017 and again in 2019 This Model D story is part of a series that highlights the challenges and solutions around housing in Detroit and is made possible through underwriting support from the Detroit (Region O) Regional Housing Partnership and the McGregor Fund. https://lnkd.in/dA3FMAjD

Our mission is to relieve the misfortunes and promote the well being of humankind.
About us
Grounded in the lived examples of Tracy and Katherine McGregor, the McGregor Fund works to support and strengthen a safety net of essential resources and opportunities for vulnerable members of our community, particularly those experiencing sustained and concentrated poverty. We believe all human beings deserve access to these essential resources and opportunities, without which a healthy, fulfilled life is impossible. People living in poverty differ only insomuch as they are unable to pay for them. Working within the tri-county region of Metropolitan Detroit, we optimize our investments of grants and staff time to strengthen the safety net of essential resources for people in need.

Thank you Heritage Works! 📌 From Rhonda Greene, Executive Director of Heritage Works, about her 2020 Miller Fellowship: “We believe that our programming is both deeply relevant artistically and has important outcomes for racial healing and Detroit’s revitalization. This fellowship will help Heritage Works and me further investigate the connections between culture, placemaking, and building a stronger, more unified Detroit.” 📌 From Heritage Works: "Our Executive Director, Rhonda Greene received the Miller Fellowship from the McGregor Fund, which allowed her to take a transformative sabbatical in South Africa! During her time there, Rhonda had the opportunity to explore the culture of Durban, witnessing inspiring performances by the K-CAP Youth Ensemble and visiting local art studios. The goal of this trip was to explore the powerful connections between culture and placemaking and how we can use these insights to strengthen and unite Detroit. We’re excited to bring back new perspectives and ideas to continue our work of fostering a more creative, connected community here at home." (Photo courtesy of Heritage Works)

Many congratulations to the Developing K.I.D.S. (Developing Kingdoms In Different Stages team! We were honored to attend our grant partner's grand opening of The Village. This central location will bolster Developing K.I.D.S.’ continued expansion of the holistic, youth-led, trauma-informed, equity-centered programs and services it offers to all interested Detroit youth and their families. In June 2023, the Fund made a $1 million grant in general operations and capital support for the retrofitting of Developing K.I.D.S.’ new location with additional space for classrooms, special events, technology learning and wellness.
Special shoutout to the amazing Developing K.I.D.S. team for all the hard work behind the scenes! 💪🏽✨ In just a few days, we moved supplies, prepped rooms for tours, and set up for our long-awaited Grand Opening. 🏢🎉 It wasn’t easy, but as our Board Chairman Charles Johnson says, we always “GET THE JOB DONE!” 💼🙌🏽 Through every pivot and challenge, this growing team rises to the occasion with passion and purpose. ❤️👏🏽 #DREAMTEAM #DevelopingKIDS #Growing #Since2006 #Teamwork #Community #PassionToServe

From DBusiness Magazine: "The McGregor Fund in Detroit has announced the hiring of Nikia Washington to serve as the fund’s first director of engagement and communications. The new role is intended to transform both the fund’s own communications and its support for grant partner organizations. This senior position was created as a direct response to grant partners’ request that the fund elevate its relationship-forward grant partner support, advocacy for rest for non-profit leaders, and unfolding work for racial and economic justice." https://lnkd.in/g5j-tPQ7
