Malls are getting a boost from a surprising source: Gen Z shoppers. Gen Z customers, roughly between ages of 13 and 28, are shopping about just as much in person as their Baby Boomer grandparents, according to a survey by ICSC, a mall industry group. And this holiday season, more Gen Zers plan to shop in person than online, according to a survey by EY. I spoke to mall owners, brands and Gen Z shoppers from The Z Suite to better understand what's driving this trend. They told me younger shoppers are seeking ways to socialize, especially after the pandemic, and speedier ways to get purchases. And Gen Z is hungry for real-world experiences to share on Instagram and TikTok. Gen Z shoppers' interest in stores is influencing the look of companies' stores and their sales patterns: At Abercrombie & Fitch’s namesake brand, which caters more to millennials, digital sales drove 60% of revenue in the last full fiscal year. That compares with only 30% at the company’s Hollister brand, which tends to attract Gen Z shoppers.
