I am elated to be here with friends and colleagues, old and new, at the symposium for The Teaching Kitchen Collaborative! Feeling inspired by the great work being done by so many and the growing interest on Culinary and Lifestyle Medicine. Inadequate food access and nutrition are a leading cause of preventable chronic diseases and mortality around the world. The work being done in this area has incredible potential to holistically move us toward better health and longer lives. Some of you already know that I love to cook and bake. It’s pretty frequent that I will sink half a Saturday or Sunday into making something new. Also, as an introvert, preparing and sharing food is one of the ways I enjoy to contribute to group gatherings. I started down this path almost 20 years ago while working as a wellness coach during undergrad. My goal with people was to help them cultivate a positive relationship food—a place where much less willpower is required to make a healthy choice. Ultimately, it was for the selecting, preparing, and eating of food to become an indulgent and restorative experience rather than a draining one. Working with so many people on this led me to deeply explore it for myself and foundationally changed my own relationship with food. Cummins Inc. launched a Teaching Kitchen 8 years ago with the opening of our near-site medical clinic in Southern Indiana, the Cummins LiveWell Center. Chef Sandy and other team members at Premise Health have built truly impactful programs and improved the lives of so many. It has been an absolute success and I’m excited for what we have planned for the future! A shout out and thank you to all of you who are doing great work and promoting Culinary Medicine and Teaching Kitchens. Thank you! And a big thank you to my alma mater University of Utah for hosting the symposium this year! Special shout out to Drs. Rachel Goossen and Richmond Doxey for leading the way for shared medical appointments with University of Utah Health! #teachingkitchens #culinarymedicine #lifestylemedicine
