Preparing children from underserved communities to be future-ready through STEAM.

About us

The Fishing School (TFS) prepares public elementary and middle school students for success in high school and life by improving their academic performance and life skills and engaging them and their parents in intensive, research-based out-of-school time (OST) and parent engagement activities. The philosophy of TFS is inspired by the adage, "If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will feed himself for a lifetime." Since 1990, our academic after-school, summer, and parent engagement programs have engaged more than 5,000 youth and their families. With 25+ years of experience, TFS combines a deep understanding of industry research and best practices with an extensive understanding of the under-served communities in which we work. TFS now serves over 400 students annually at four school sites through our innovative two-generational Cohort Model, a unique multi-year OST program delivery model that includes academics, life skills, and parent engagement programming for 1st to 8th graders living in underserved neighborhoods in Washington, DC’s Wards 6, 7, and 8.

  • Empower kids to DREAM and STEAM big! HEY, YOU! YES, YOU! It’s #GivingTuesday, and we’re here to make some NOISE for our amazing kids at @TheFishingSchool! Sure, there are a lot of great organizations asking for your support today, but let’s be real: KIDS ARE THE LOUDEST. (Don’t believe us? Try sitting next to them during snack time.  ) But here’s the quiet part we don’t want to whisper:  Less than 5% of STEM programs reach young students in high-poverty schools in DC.  That’s not OK.  And we’re changing it. With your help, @TheFishingSchool is empowering under-resourced kids to dream big—STEM big—so they can grow into leaders, innovators, and community builders.  Our goal: $20,000 by December 31. That’s not just a number. It’s more STEM kits, more science experiments, and more chances for these amazing kids to shape the future they deserve. So let’s raise the roof, raise some funds, and raise up these young voices that already know how to be loud. Donate now and be part of the ripple effect: visit https://lnkd.in/etPKMDss #GivingTuesday #TheFishingSchool #FishingForFutures #STEMpowerment #afterschoollearning #nextgeneration

  • Monday Learning Moment: Perfecting the Pollinators! In STEM, our students have learned how to unlock their inner engineer. This week, students will be practicing a key engineering skill: redesigning a prototype. The pollinators that they’ve been working so hard on will be perfected by the end of the week. Have you ever improved something after you’ve created it? Let us know how you did it in the comments! P.S. If you want to support our little engineers in this project and more, TOMORROW, December 3, is #GivingTuesday - donate early or mark your calendars and GIVE.
