⭐March is Women's History Month⭐ Do you know how many women are behind your one cup of Chai? Women make up majority of the workforce -70% in the tea and spice industry. Women workers are an asset and backbone of these industries yet they are considered the most abundant and cheapest labor force. Women earn a very low income for their specialized work and suffer from low levels of health care and personal well-being. A woman tea picker will work eight to ten hours a day and ONLY get paid by the weight of the tea leaves she has picked rather than an hourly wage. There are no toilet facilities or fresh water supplies in most gardens so many suffer illnesses such as UTIs. It is imperative to demand basic health safety, clean water and fair wages for a more equitable trade for women in the tea and spice industry. I encourage you to support companies that work directly with farmers and tea gardens and have set standards to ensure women are respected, treated fairly and compensated well for their craft. I am proud to say we work with farms and farmers that embody these values. During my recent trip to Kerala, I had the opportunity to visit and talk one on one with these amazing women and hear their stories. Next time you enjoy a cup of our Chai, know you are helping these women and enjoying the labor of their love and hard work. Before The Chai Box days, I use to travel as a business consultant and take Monday morning flights and come home on Fridays! It was exhausting but a great learning experience! This week, I had the opportunity to do business travel with Ethan. As a mom I was selfishly looking forward to spending time with my college son because let's face it, every minute is precious bc it's not like before when your kids lived with you and you had their entire social calendar at your finger tips! I was so excited to have him just to myself for 2 days. What I learned was how equally excited he was! That just melted my heart and if you can imagine, I was emotional throughout the trip. We had a great time visiting our partners and I was in awe of how passionate he felt about our family business in talking to everyone! My heart is full y'all. I am thankful for the blessings our little chai business has brought us but most importantly the opportunity to spend family time together is EVERYTHING! The very reason I started doing Chai time with my boys was to have family time together. The Chai Box has allowed that continuation. Chai means Family and that's it!
