This plan tackles the major challenges facing the domestic aluminum sector and calls for a national strategy to prioritize, produce and defend critical materials like aluminum. Specifically, the briefing emphasizes the need to: ✔️ Pursue strong, targeted trade enforcement. ✔️ Collect and keep more aluminum for America. ✔️ Recognize aluminum as critical for economic and national security. ✔️ Invest in America by investing in aluminum. Our new report with the Can Manufacturers Institute found that the recycling rate for the aluminum beverage can in the U.S. has ticked down in recent years amidst aging recycling infrastructure and a passive approach to recycling policy. The latest data found that 43% of aluminum cans shipped in the United States in 2023 were ultimately recycled – far below an average rate of around 52% since tracking began in 1990. While this still comfortably exceeds the equivalent recycling rate for glass and plastic (PET) bottles, recycling rates for aluminum cans are at their lowest point in decades. Andy Home at Reuters News Agency zeroes in on one of the key challenges facing the U.S. aluminum industry in the coming years. With $10 billion+ invested over the past decade in new plants and capacity, we need to collect and keep more aluminum scrap to support and grow American manufacturing.

The Aluminum Association welcomes President-elect Trump’s efforts to support American manufacturing by tackling unfair global trade. We also believe that continued tariff exemptions for imports of Canadian aluminum – originally negotiated by President Trump under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement – are vitally important. Open, tariff-free aluminum trade with Canada has underpinned much of the more than $10 billion in domestic investment the industry has made over the past decade. The U.S. industry must source about 2/3 of the primary aluminum it uses every year from Canada, since all domestic smelters, even running at full capacity, cannot produce nearly enough metal to meet demand. We will continue to work with the administration to tailor trade interventions to help our industry, and U.S. manufacturing in general, succeed. Last week's Aluminum Association Casthouse Safety Workshop in Detroit drew 100+ industry professionals, with more than 80% first-time attendees. The workshop series, established in 1993, has become a global benchmark in safety training for Casthouse operators and supervisors who interact with molten aluminum on a daily basis. The aluminum industry has long made worker safety a top priority—thank you to our speakers and attendees for helping us continue to further improve safety performance! 

We’re honored to be part of a coalition urging Congress to pass two critical bipartisan recycling bills before the end of the year. The Recycling Infrastructure Accessibility Act (RIAA) proposes a pilot program to boost recycling access in underserved and rural areas, while the Recycling Composting Accountability Act (RCAA) seeks to establish guidelines for tracking recycling and composting, facilitating improvements through data-driven strategies. Together, with other leaders in this space, we’re advocating for solutions that are good for the economy, the environment and our domestic supply chains. Happy America Recycles Day! ♻️ We are proud that aluminum is one of the most recycled (and recyclable) materials on Earth. From cans to cars to construction, aluminum can be recycled over and over again in an infinite loop. This is why 75% of all the aluminum ever produced is still in use today. But we can do more! In the beverage can market, the average American throws away twelve 12-packs (that's more than $1 billion worth of aluminum) into landfills every year.
