When Teleos President John Godbehere was in Japan visiting sweetpotato growing regions, he had the chance to tour the Kirishima Distillery. Kirishima Shuzo is a traditional honkaku shochu distillery founded in 1916 in Miyazaki prefecture, Kyushu, and the country’s leading shochu producer. Shochu is a spirit distilled from sweetpotatoes and a very popular beverage across Japan. Sweetpotato harvest typically occurs in late summer through early winter, and small distilleries often begin production in August or September. Larger distilleries have more mechanized operations that allow them to freeze steamed sweetpotatoes for distillation year-round. While there are more than 50 varieties of sweetpotatoes that can be used to make shochu, the most common variety is kogane sengan, which has specifically been cultivated for shochu production. This varietal is known for its large size, white flesh, and high starch content—which leads to higher alcohol content. Artisanal shochu distilleries often use the smaller and sweeter sweetpotatoes that are found roasted and sold in stores, called satsuma imo. These craft shochus are often more expensive but evoke the flavors and aromas of the beloved roasted sweetpotatoes found throughout Japan. Because sweetpotatoes are often affected by nematodes, John shared with the Kirishima team how TELONE™ can help suppress nematodes and help improve both yields and quality. We even talked about setting up a trial on one of Kirishima’s sweetpotato fields next season! Interested in learning more about TELONE™ for your sweetpotatoes? Visit www.teleosag.com. Root-lesion nematodes (RLNs) are so small that they can't be seen with the naked eye. They have a syringe-like "stylet" at their head end that they use to break open plant root cells and extract nutrients. RLNs are one of the most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes in the world. They can be found in almost any soil texture and can damage over 400 crop plant species, including many of the specialty crops grown in the USA. Root-lesion nematodes can cause necrotic lesions (dark spots of dead tissue) on the roots of plants, which ultimately lead to negative impacts on quality and yield loss. Learn how TELONE™ can protect your future harvests from destructive nematodes. www.teleosag.com Remember, there's no coming back from a poor start! #TELONE #thebestdefenseagainstnematodes #rootlesionnematodes #integratedpestmanagement #IPM #specialtycrops #soilhealth #healthysoil

The North Carolina Sweetpotato Commission released this Guava Root-Knot research update from NC State Extension's Assistant Professor of Plant Nematology Dr. Adrienne Gorny. Dr. Gorny shares that pre-plant fumigation with TELONE™ is still one of the best options sweetpotato growers have for managing the destructive guava root-knot nematode. Teleos President John Godbehere had the opportunity to see sweetpotatoes being harvested on a small farm in Chiba Prefecture. Check out this video to see how the equipment moves through the field, digging up the sweetpotatoes that are then collected by the field workers as they ride along with the machine. Sweetpotatoes are an important crop in Japanese culture, with extreme value placed on high quality. That’s why most Japanese sweetpotato growers rely on TELONE™ to help prepare their soil and manage nematodes. Using TELONE™ ahead of planting creates a zone of protection during the first 6-8 weeks of growth, allows roots to develop in an environment where nematodes are controlled. This leads to improved yields and higher quality—all without ever touching the crop or leaving behind any residuals. Learn more about TELONE™ at www.teleosag.com. Final fall TELONE™ applications are underway for potatoes in the Pacific Northwest. Growers in this region face high nematode pressure which causes decreased yields and poor quality spuds. Thankfully, growers who prep their soil with TELONE™ create a zone of protection where young potato plants can grow without nematode pressure. This leads to increased marketable yields and improved quality. Prep now, reap the rewards later! Remember, there's no coming back from a poor start! The last stop on our #TeamTeleos EU tour was a visit to the SIS packaging facility in Sicily, Italy. Andrea Minuto (fumigation expert, from CeRSAA Labs) led the tour and demonstrated the equipment SIS uses in TELONE™ applications in greenhouses across the country. SIS is the leader in European custom fumigation applications, specializing in both greenhouse and open-field applications. It’s interesting to note that in Europe, a larger amount of agriculture relies on greenhouses, as compared to the United States. Greenhouses offer a protected environment for a variety of fruits and vegetables and this is often the preferred growing method for farmers across Europe. Whether growers choose a greenhouse or open fields, one thing they have in common is knowing that nothing works better against destructive nematodes than TELONE™! TELONE™ offers application flexibility so growers can apply the product where they need and how they need it—whether it’s broadcast in an open field or via in-line drip application through irrigation systems. Visit www.teleosag.com to learn how TELONE™ can help set you up for a successful season. We wanted to share more photos from Dr. Randy (RM) Huckaba's recent sweetpotato field trials in Eureka, NC. Dr. Huckaba had help from several #TeamTeleos crew, including our USA Sales Manager Bruce Jacobs, Mid-Atlantic TELONE™ Specialist Greg Roberson, and USA Credit Manager Bill Reinbott. Dr. Adrienne Gorny from NC State Extension and consultant Chris Pierce were also onsite helping harvest, sort and count. The photos show the grower plowing up sweetpotatoes, then harvesting and sorting. The potatoes are categorized as either number 1‘s (marketable), jumbos, or culls. We then determine the count of number 1’s that are not damaged by root-knot nematode to establish marketable quantity. The test treatments included TELONE™ II as well as TELONE™/Chloropicrin combinations. The results showed that TELONE™ provided very good control of the devastating guava root-knot nematode. We look forward to sharing the results of these trials in the coming months. If you're a sweetpotato grower interested in learning more about how TELONE™ can set you up for a successful season, visit www.teleosag.com. #TELONE #thebestdefenseagainstnematodes #GuavaRootKnot #rootknotnematodes #nematodes #nematodemanagement #fieldtrials #NCAg #agriculture #healthysoil #soilhealth

Next on the #TeamTeleos EU adventure was a visit to see several greenhouse trials in Murcia, Spain. Teleos works with a third-party bio-analytical testing company called Eurofins Métodos Servicios Agrícolas. The Eurofins team we’re working with is led by Miguel Angel Diez. Miguel showed us around his greenhouse facility where several ongoing crop protection trials are currently underway, including trials with TELONE™, Chloropicrin, contact nematicides, and soil solarization. To ensure growers around the world have access to fully-vetted and successful integrated and sustainable pest management programs, trials are conducted using various products at different rates across multiple crops. Miguel is an expert in every part of the process, from field application to lab work and runs an impressive operation. He updated our team on the status of the various greenhouse trials and then took us to the lab to show us how he classifies the roots of the plants using a galling index. He finished by showing us his process of counting nematodes. The ability to see these various treatments side-by-side, followed by quantifiable data after harvest, is invaluable to prescriptive soil management plans. We look forward to sharing the results of these trials in the coming months. Until then, learn more about TELONE™ and how it’s the best defense against nematodes by visiting www.teleosag.com.
