Attention Chicago Sellers! If you use Avalara as your tax engine, here’s a key update. The Chicago personal property lease transaction tax is no longer treated as a sales tax in Avalara software—it’s now classified as a rental tax. This matters because the change can impact you, software vendors, and other businesses that rely on Avalara. Ensure your systems are updated to stay compliant! Got questions? Reach out at TaxOps.com. Tax amnesty programs offer a unique chance for taxpayers to settle outstanding liabilities with reduced penalties and interest but not all programs are created equally. Connie Zoerink at TaxOps, LLC had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion at this year’s Colorado Government Finance Officers Association (CGFOA) Conference alongside city tax auditors Jeff Edwards from Aurora and Quintin Hilburn from Denver. The outcome was a host of interesting insights about our home rule cities, where VDA program preferences, lookback periods, and policies vary widely. Key takeaways include: - VDA programs are beneficial for both cities and taxpayers. - Variations in lookback periods and VDA policies among cities. If you need assistance with Colorado Home Rule cities, the TaxOps’ SALTovation team is here to help. We've been actively involved with Colorado’s sales tax system for 25 years and advocate for simplification to promote voluntary compliance. Chicago's tax is now classified as a rental tax in Avalara’s tax engine—not a sales tax. While this aligns with the tax’s intent, it may impact your setup if you sell into Chicago. If you have exempt customers, ensure your ERP or POS systems are updated to communicate properly with Avalara. Check your systems now to avoid potential tax headaches! Got questions? At Saltovation, we’ve tackled Colorado's voluminous returns for years. But now, Illinois is stepping up its requirements with changes effective January 1, 2025. Heads up for Illinois taxpayers: Expect added complexity to filings, especially with in-state operations. More paper (PDFs, anyone?) and compliance hurdles are on the horizon.
