Feedback can go south quickly, but if you follow Matthew Bowers' advice and have a conversation, it will go much smoother and chances are both sides will get more out of it.
The best way to get feedback from your manager is NOT to say, “Can I have feedback?” The best way to get feedback is to have a good conversation. But if conversation is impracticable with your manager, you can at least ask slightly more targeted questions. For example, you could ask your manager how they would have handled a challenge you recently went through. You could ask them for 3 ways you could have improved your recent work product. You could ask them where they recommend you focus your time to maximize career development. You could ask where they focused their own time when they were at your stage in their career. The better your questions, the more feedback you’ll get. Sure, in an ideal workplace, your manager is skilled enough to give feedback without YOU being skilled in asking for it. But the workplace isn’t always ideal, is it? :)
