About us
For over 45 years, Swords to Plowshares has provided direct services for low-income, homeless, and at-risk San Francisco Bay Area veterans regardless of era of service or discharge status. Our Drop-in Center provides outreach and critical care to help homeless, low-income and at-risk veterans. Our Case Managers and intake staff help stabilize veterans with crisis intervention, counseling and case management, in-house and community referrals, assistance securing emergency and permanent housing and a host of other critical needs. We have operated successful stabilization and permanent supportive housing programs for more than two decades and have seven different housing sites. We also offer supportive services that improve outcomes, including Rapid Re-housing services, eviction protections, and money management programs. Veterans work one-on-one with our Employment & Training Program staff to address their individual needs, overcome obstacles to employment, and determine a long-term career plan. We provide job placement assistance and vocational training programs to help veterans translate their skills and train for new careers in high-growth, high-wage careers in the civilian sector. We are one of the few organizations in the country that provide free legal consultation and attorney representation to veterans seeking assistance with the Department of Veterans Affairs benefits and military discharge upgrade cases. Our services are targeted to address the needs of homeless and low-income veterans and are all free of charge. Our Institute for Veteran Policy (IVP) works to strengthen systems of care for veterans and their families. IVP’s policy and community education efforts are unique, reflecting decades of experience in direct community-based care, access to housing, benefits, mental and physical healthcare, and employment services.

For 50 years, our community is what has kept us going. In order to uphold our mission to end poverty and homelessness among veterans, now is the time to strengthen our bonds with the people and organizations that believe in our work. Thank you to those who continue to show up for Bay Area veterans. #vetshelpingvets Get a glimpse of our vibrant community with the #Swords50 photo gallery: https://lnkd.in/eMR79Ec6

💪COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: As we gear up for the holidays, we share our immense gratitude to our community of veteran advocates and supporters. At #Swords50, it was an honor to celebrate with our friends from Salesforce (special shout outs to #Vetforce, Tom House and Hydra Mendoza) whose partnership helped make the event possible. #supportvets #vetshelpingvets #VeteransDay

🌟EVENT RECAP: We are still in awe of the incredible turnout we had last week at #Swords50. It could not have been possible without the support of our steadfast partners, including Wells Fargo. Their support for Swords to Plowshares runs deep, and we are grateful for leaders like Christopher A., vice president of community relations at Wells Fargo and Swords' Board member, for championing fellow veterans. Thank you for your kind words, Chris! #vetshelpingvets

🌟EVENT RECAP: Last week, we celebrated #Swords50 at our annual Veterans Day fundraiser, and honored Michael Blecker for his lifelong commitment to serving and advocating for veterans. The story of Swords can't be told without Michael - watch him and a few of our friends tell it in this video: https://lnkd.in/eg-wqzFZ

Joel Champion is the perfect example of our organization's mission: #VetsHelpingVets. After leaving the Navy in 1994, Joel, like many veterans, struggled with the transition. Issues with substance abuse led Joel to seek help with First Step Program in Menlo Park, and it was there that he was referred to Swords to Plowshares. Joel entered our transitional housing, counseling and Jobs for Vets. Joel's personal and direct experience with our organization would lead him to pursue a career in substance abuse and addiction counseling, and eventually back to Swords to Plowshares - first as an intake specialist at our Drop-in Center, then as a case manager with our Supportive Services program, and now in his role as Assistant Director of Property Management. We are lucky to have him. Learn more of Joel's story here: https://ow.ly/eRvL50TYcF0 #Swords50
