🎓 Gimmicky product displays work - and sell People were 28% more likely to want to buy an energy drink when it was arranged in a battle tank display 🔬 In 2 field experiments and 4 online experiments, researchers found that: - When a candy store displayed boxes of chocolates in a cylindrical shape (vs a standard cube), sales increased 189.3% - Arranging tissue boxes in a quasi-circular cone caused a 53.02% increase in ROI - People were 15.64% more likely to want to buy toilet paper when it was stacked in the shape of a bear 🧠 Why? - Imaginative product displays look different and stand out making us notice them - We are also more interested in buying products with a novel or unexpected look - They also boost our brand perceptions - Which makes us more likely to interact with the product and buy it 📈 Display products in fun and imaginative shapes. I’m excited to share a recent project on Sphere that offered a refreshing shift in tone from our Halloween themes—a stained glass-inspired installation that brings a sense of calm and beauty to the space. I jumped in towards the end of this project to help bring it across the finish line, and I’m incredibly proud of how it turned out. This piece is a reminder of the range and impact that thoughtful, dynamic visuals can have on an audience, creating not only a visual experience but also a moment of tranquility. How can retailers use experiential marketing to develop meaningful connections with their shoppers? While at Galyan’s (now DICK'S Sporting Goods), Bret Thurston launched their signature, first-of-its-kind rock climbing wall as the store’s early experiential activation to draw their target audience in. (Thanks to Bret - a pioneer of experiential retail - climbing walls are common nowadays, but this was pretty revolutionary back then!) At Path to Purchase Institute's P2PI Live, we teamed up with The CPG Guys to host an industry dinner - where we learned that Claire Wyatt was a regular at Galyan’s, because she loved scaling that rock wall to ring the bell at the top of the summit. This kept her coming back to the store, week after week. Turns out, Claire was an avid outdoors enthusiast, even going onto join the Alpine Ski Team in college and remaining a competitive athlete her entire life. She was the exact type of consumer that Bret wanted to target with this activation; he wanted to convert the regular wall climbers - the perfect Galyan shopper - into loyal customers. Experiential marketing creates meaningful connections between the retailer brand and the consumer, and these emotion-filled memories become a foundation for brand loyalty.
