  • We’re so proud to have been recognised as one of the top 20 Black-owned businesses in the UK as part of the Channel 4 & Lloyds Bank Black in Business Campaign. To be shortlisted for this initiative has been a huge honour. Opportunities like this shine a light on Black-owned businesses and the vital work they do, and it means a lot to see Storymix included alongside so many incredible companies. While the campaign moves ahead, we’re proud to be part of the conversation and even prouder of the joyful, inclusive stories we continue to create. Congratulations to all the brilliant businesses recognised—we’re excited to see what comes next!

  • Our founder spoke about regret and bravery in her keynote yesterday at The Bookseller children’s conference and she shared some hard truths as well. https://lnkd.in/ehwMAx-v

At yesterday's The Bookseller Children's Conference, I gave a keynote about being brave at work. I shared that there have been points in my career where I have not been brave and that I live with the regret of that. I said that regret can be a catalyst and was a catalyst for founding Storymix. Yesterday, I chose to be brave rather than have regrets. I shared a hard truth with the industry I have worked in for 20 years: We are seeing a breathtakingly swift rollback in the championing stories from creators of colour since the summer of Black squares. I know this because I pitch and sell books to publishers. I get the bird’s eye view and I see the patterns. I know a few other things as well. Many Black creators feel like they never had a seat at the table but were a seasonal menu item. The industry is playing it very safe at the moment. Individual decisions collectively shape industry trends. I am hopeful for the publishing industry. I love this industry. But brave and honest conversations are needed to move things in the right direction and reimagine what is possible. Be Brave.

We are thrilled to announce that Storymix has been awarded a Deutsche Bank Award for Creative Entrepreneurs (DBACE)! This recognition comes at the perfect time, as we celebrate our 5th anniversary and look ahead to some exciting developments. Alongside the £15k grant (thank you, Deutsche Bank!), our founder has also joined the MeWe360 Incubator programme, which kicked off this week. The incubator has already brought together a passionate cohort of social entrepreneurs, all brimming with ideas and energy. It's a fantastic opportunity to think beyond the day-to-day operations and dream big about what’s next for Storymix. So, what's on the horizon for us? Launching our micro-publisher initiative and preparing for our 2025 release: The Other Father Xmas Securing brand partnerships Exploring crowdfunding to build new audiences Developing our illustrator-led fiction list Creating direct sales channels for underserved readers, including pop-up events As our founder shared on the night, "The road hasn't always been easy, and winning this award is a huge validation of the work Storymix is doing to incubate talent from racially minoritized backgrounds, inspire the next generation of storytellers in schools, and create books that centre all children. Every child deserves to see themselves in stories, and quality representation encourages reading. Reading for pleasure is key to social mobility." A massive thank you to Deutsche Bank and MeWe360 for their generous support. If you’d like to be part of the Storymix journey or support our mission, let’s connect! Photo credit: @mariphotography

  • We're officially five years old today. A big thank you to EVERYONE who has been part of the journey so far. Over the next few months we will try and spotlight some of those that have made Storymix and our mission to centre kids of colour in stories full of joy adventure, and be a launchpad for talent from racially marginalized backgrounds possible. But until then some Saturday stats for you about businesses. Almost 50% of businesses have to close in their first five years of trading in the UK. 15% of small businesses are owned/founded by a woman in the UK. Black-led employers make up just 0.1% of UK small and medium sized businesses. For context these are all numbers from studies in 2023. It was by no means a guarantee that we would be here in 2024 after launching at London Book Fair in 2019. But we are so very proud that we are! #happybirthday #femaleentrepreneur #blackledbusinesses #weneeddiversebooks #ittakesavillage #kidsbooks

  • We’re delighted to announce that our CEO Jasmine Richards has been nominated in the Innovation category of the inaugural PublisHer Excellence Awards. Jasmine, and the inclusive fiction studio she founded in 2019 to incubate new talent from racially minoritized backgrounds and in response to the lack of quality representation of children of colour in fiction, has been shortlisted from a very strong field of extraordinary publishing professionals from across the world. We couldn't be prouder. Thank you Bodour Al Qasimi and the panel of judges for this accolade. Storymix is 5 years old in April 2024. What a way to celebrate!

I’m incredibly proud to announce that my episode of #JoJoandGranGran will be broadcast TOMORROW on CBeebies as part of the new winter season. It’s called Time to Braid Hair and honestly it is just a little explosion of joy - yes I am biased (I wrote this episode after all) but it is a celebration of having your hair braided by someone who loves you. The memory of that, even as a grown-up, is something that lights me up, and I hope this episode does the same for you. I adore this show and what it stands for and I’m so proud that I could be a part of it. I kind of fell into scriptwriting [at the same time I was launching Storymix] almost 5 years ago and the skills I've learnt from working on shows like PJ Masks and Jo Jo and Gran Gran have been incredibly important for my success as a kids media producer and story creator. It is thanks to the kindness and support of experienced producers like Tom Cousins and Ros Attille that I got to hone my storytelling skills on this show and of course I must thank the wonderful power-house that is Laura Henry-Allain MBE and her stories that inspired the series. Big thanks as well to #BBCStudiosKidsAndFamily #CBeebiesHQ #BBCStudios for making me feel like part of the family and the whole rest of the team. Lastly Comfort Arthur you nailed this episode - not easy to animate braiding 😅 and thanks for keeping the cushions in 😉! Love you Jo Jo. And love you Gran Gran. #kidscontent #screenwriting #founderstories #representationmatters
