There is a tendency in data analysis to focus on what is in front of you. After all, what else is there to consider? But data does not speak for itself. And while the available data combined with deep domain knowledge forms a useful narrative, so does the data which is not available. At the beginning of the Second World War, the allies took an intuitive approach to armoring aircraft. They examined planes after they returned from battle and took note of where the bullet holes were located. They concluded that these parts of the aircraft were more likely to be hit and would therefore benefit the most from additional armor. Everything changed when Hungarian mathematician Abraham Wald realized they had been looking at a biased sample of the data. By considering what was not in front of his eyes, he was able to infer that the parts of the planes where bullet holes were consistently found were the parts that could survive being shot. Conversely, the planes being shot in areas where damage was not found were destroyed in battle and thus not considered in the dataset. When armor began being placed on these parts of the plane, aircraft survival rates improved significantly. Wald’s story is a warning against drawing conclusions solely from the information one can see while ignoring what's missing. By considering the context of the problem and making estimates about the data that is missing, survivorship bias can be combatted. Spinnaker Analytics leverages decades of industry expertise to build this context and make these estimations, developing comprehensive insights which consider all dimensions of the problem.
