A type of clams called heart cockles have structures in their shells that channel certain wavelengths of light into their shells, similar to fiber optic cables. Though more research is necessary, the research team from Stanford and Duke Universities hopes their findings could inspire new fiber optic cable designs.

On Dec. 9, 1868, the first traffic light in the world was installed in London, England. Railway manager John Peake Knight designed the semaphore traffic light to resemble the semaphore system they used at rail intersections.
